PS The more I think of it, the real thing I was willing to say was “The Touch Of The SVDS” (on any amp it goes into).

Boy, wasn’t it real for us. These units have beaten to hell Time and Space. Yes, because 30 years later, they’re still here and working, and making their thing.

Technical note. the Marshall 1959 used here had the following settings:

 

Presence: 0

Bass: 6

Mids: 4-5

Treble: 6

Volume: 7

 

That is, typical Angus Young settings.

The attenuator was still used, but less i.e., the amplifier loudness was definitely higher, finally breaking up a bit more the speakers (Speakers used were original 1979 G12-65s).

Microphones used were one vintage Neumann U67 and one vintage Neumann U87. L

A little reverb was added in post, as well as very mild equalization (some very mild mid-scooping on HMF and LMF, nothing else).

The guitar is a 1969 Gibson SG Custom, with a new, Angus Young signature bridge humbucker.

 

NO whatsoever gate was used. Nothing. What comes through the microphones is what you hear. Basically, no hiss on this unit. 

Out of the three, working SVDS units we have, this is definitely the best sounding one, in terms of almost not audible hiss. Almost not there! What you hear is what it is.

Update note: We just received a kind email of Mr. Rick St. Pierre (Wizard founder, owner and maker) who has informed us that AC/DC started using Wizard amplifiers exactly during the 1990 Razor Edge tour. 

I think it doesn’t get more accurate than this, since he is the man who provided, serviced and maintained the amps for AC/DC!

It was one quick email exchange with Mr. Ken Schaffer (his personal site here) that suggested me (well, he did) a possible title to end this year and bring on the next one.

Given my recent meeting with Mr. Elliott Randall (and my past as a listener to Steely Dan since I was oh 17 years old) I just had to try and wear much larger shoes than mine: Mr. Randall’s, in fact.

So it is another sweet pleasure to introduce you to “Reelin’ In The Years”.

To those of you who haven’t listened to Steely Dan yet – please do so. There is world to learn about music into Steely Dan.

And now Ladies (any ladies here at all? 🙂 ) & Gentlemen.

A moment of Respect & Admiration for the man himself, Mr. Ken Schaffer.

I presume all of you are able to feel the respect and admiration that I have for Mr. Schaffer. I have read his biography (though partial and summarized, see his site ) several times, and it would appear that he has lived 5 or 6 different lives all packed into one. By itself this is cause for admiration, but reading what he has achieved, and how he has achieved it really ‘does it for me’. Also, last but not least, the making of the SVDS with its history and accompanying stories is overwhelming.

So please enjoy these two images of Mr. Schaffer.

This one took me circa four days to prepare, before final recording that is. I have been trying with the microphone position (Neumann U47) and with mild – really just a bit – equalization.

The microphone used in this album – or the microphones – was a Neumann U47 FET, a different microphone to the Neumann U 47 tube version, which is older than the FET design. (more…)
