14 Sep The Metro Session: Technical specifications and some pictures

So, I’m launching today – as promised – my first test (I was testing myself, not the amp πŸ˜† ) with this Metro (George Metropoulos Amplification).

We recorded – my ex-sound Engineer – Chris – and I – in the same place where I had recorded the AC/DC tone video.

Three microphones were used, a condenser Neumann U87 and two dynamic Shure SM57s, one on the front of the cab and one in the back (to capture more bass and the reverb of the room).

The microphones were preamplified and converted into ProTools LE 8.0.4, with which we recorded the whole session.

Circa 16 guitars were used, I really haven’t counted them and I think their actual number is really indifferent.

Camera used for video was a Canon 5D MkII in HD. At times, these kind of cameras – DSLRs – heat up too much and the thing died on me several times. Damn. So I “lost” some video footage. The audio footage though was always captured safely so I’ll post it anyway, in audio format.

This was made as a first experiment, its objective being, to try and re-create that famous Marshall tones that many of us – I for sure – are in love with.

At the end of the session, we also recorded circa 4 guitars with my older Marshall 1987XL reissue head modified by David Bray. So you may be able to draw some conclusions in terms of differences between these two actual heads.

A LOAD of pictures – pictures often speak more than words.

depuis1899, i have a blackstar ht 5 and i can get acdc’s sound with it. I don’t even put the gain at half, but the volume is high, more than half. middle: 5, Bass: 6 Treble: 4, isf: 10. After that, you just need to attack the strings to get the sound with the right hand. Moreover i use a reverb pedal, but we can play without.

I think the room were you play is important too. My amp stands in an edge of my bedroom, sounds not very good. I want a good place like u πŸ˜€

Blackstars are great amps for the money. But they arent in the same class as Marshalls are, allthough i have to say that in sound and the way they overdrive/distort they realy remind me of a kind of mixed up marshall sound from 59SLPs to JCM800s. I wouldnt buy a head, since it costs as much as a real Marshall but the 5watt combo has one of the best tones in its class.

The pictures reminds me somehow of some sort of band preparing to put up instruments, amps and such for recording an album in the room, in some ways it just does.

you are the luckiest man in the world! (ok, actually the 2nd one, the 1st is bill gates: become the richest man in the world, with pretty much no knowledge? wow… πŸ˜€ ) I can only dream about even a brand new Gibson. And you have a whole collection of vintage Gibsons. wow. good for you πŸ˜€

Thank you, thank you VERY much. Not sure how old you are, but remember, I’m 42 :) I worked hard (still do) in the years to get all of this. When I was young, I was… poor. All I could get was a Yamaha – my first real guitar – it was an “SG2000″. The closes thing (to me, at the time, to a Gibson SG. I kept those for years, as my only guitar. When I turned circa 23, I could start looking around. Took me a long time. :)

well, I’m only 17, so there’s not much to worry about yet. πŸ˜€ pretty much the whole life is yet to come for me… I hope I will be able to afford stuff like this. However, I like my current guitar too (it’s a Vintage VS6, a VERY nice quality SG copy). It sounds amazing for its price, and also feels pretty good. I just like it. πŸ˜€ btw… Fil, do you know how do I change my little display picture on my account ? I have no clue on that.

Hi Fil, you really are a “guitar junkie”, lol xD
    Great stuff!!

If you had to choose only one of these guitars to keep, which one would it be…?

    Cheers from Stockholm, Sweden

Probably the Lentz, but listen carefully: I LOVE each one of those guitars. I spent time with each one setting her up to my likings, and every one means to me. I and I play each one for a reason :)

Hi Fil, thanks for asking, understand your love for guitars. Recently started again after a 20 year break (!) – got a Gibson SG, Greco Les Paul and Telecaster. Like them all! Which Lentz model was that by the way? Cheers Jonas

I must confess I’m a bit jealous πŸ˜€ All that nice equipment, nice Gibsons, nice amps, … πŸ˜€ U said that Metro-amp costs about 2k Dollars? How many Euro’s is that? That place were u recorded all of this… is that at our home? Cause great recording place I have to say…

      about 1500-1600 €
it’s too much for me, first i need to save the money, but i won’t give more then 800 € for an amp, 20 Watt are enough for me πŸ˜›

Thanks JL. Nope, not my home: it’s a large mechanical room in the middle of nowhere, so I can be sure that I can crank the amp up and I won’t bother anyone. I think it’s 1.6k euro?

When you ask boutique guys for products, since they build them in short numbers – you can ask to have a specific thing made for you. This was the case for this amp.

fil that amp sound so great
where do i found more infos of that stuff?
i have my blackstar, i’s great, but i don’t get the sound i want with it and my SG…
i mean look i know i’m not Angus but.. i have an SG and i want something that is not far away of AC/DC’s sound, but i’m far away with my HT-5
if you could give me some links where i can find that it would be nice, thanks a lot =)

Chris – buddy – you’re asking me the simplest thing: of COURSE I am going to give you the link to George. If you are seriously interested, contact him and tell him you want the same amplifier as SoloDallas.
Although I haven’t discussed with George about this yet, I am willing to make it the “SoloDallas” amp mod, as it had happened with my David Bray modded head.
      Here’s George’s link:

      Please let me know. Fil!
