More Back in Black Attempts- Update

27 Oct More Back in Black Attempts- Update

Update: Listened to you guys and re-did the drums levels. Plus added some compression on the drums, too (helps the punch). Huh?

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

If you’re wondering why I have been rather silent, it’s because I was still trying, and still trying, …

Back in Black. Probably one of the hardest songs to nail, ever. Two days – not full days naturally, as work is also there an’ all… but is it hard to play! Sounds “easy”, those three chords, but the timing is so groovy and physically unnatural to play (not to listen to and to hear, but to play) that I must have re-played it as a whole (bass, three guitars, including the Gretsch on the left side) maybe 10 times. Yet still, it’s not like the original.

I have to say that these drum loops I am using are really not good. Not punchy or groovy enough I think. Still. this is it.

I played it with the 1976 Super Lead, with an Ultimate attenuator at bedroom levels. Used the 1960B with blackbacks inside. This time I used two microphones, and the difference is amazing. I positioned them – I tried – the same way that Platt described (link here). Will post a picture asap. It MAKES a huge difference.

Then, I had to separately equalize the microphones, which means coping with six equalization patterns, two per guitar for all three guitars. I used the same EQ’s for the SG (on centre and right), but different, very different for the Gretsch, which has a totally different sound. Also, the amp settings for the Gretsch were altered, it required less “Volume”, down to 5.

Actually, I used the same volume for the SG but “boosted it” with a volume stompbox, just a volume boost, no extra gain, and I set the “tone” of the box (similar to a Klone) in the middle position, to try and boost mids.

You judge the results.

Will add more details later

I think the second one sounds better. The first one sounds a bit, I dont know… weak(?). Both of ’em are a piece of art though!

Im listening to the begining of
“Back In Black” right know, and the big difference between your versions and the real one is: The sound. On the original, you can really hear the raw chords played by Mal’ and the magic lick played by Angus. It’s just somethin’ indescribable… I can just describe it as raw. Like a bite!

Still Fil, your one of the worlds best guitar players and your a great lad!

    Wish you the best mate!
    Cheers x /Anthony

Well it doesn’t sound exataully like the album, but does that matter? It’s full of feeling and really rocking! Not sure where to post random questions, but what are your guys thoughts on ‘Airbourne’ a band that clearly has been inspired by Ac/Dc?
    Ciao

I had actually mentioned Airbourne on a different post. I had heard them playing in Best Buy and the two guys working in the music section thought it was AC/DC! I like their sound a lot, although most people would agree that their skill is no where near AC/DC’s (as stated by Fil). Some of their songs are just WAY TOO FAST and I think they need a lead guitarist rather than having a singer/lead guitarist. Other than those few things I think they’re a rockin’ band. I would definitely go to see one of their concerts.

Nice.

All 5 sounds very nice, number 4 is my favourite. Seems to be a good idea to play along a bit to self recorded tracks.

Very good in fact: I played on track and let it running while reading and browsing, and my son is playing with his grandmother. The first track it was, even relaxing. Tres jolie! Recording ourselves is one of the best practicing presents we can make to ourselves.
