Details details… God is in the details, they say.
Before you proceed in reading this one, I ask that you read my previous one. The album “Highway To Hell” has naturally many things in common song for song first and foremost being, naturally, the way the guitars were recorded. So please make sure you read here “Walk All Over You” before continuing the short remainder below.
Having worked for so long on the previous “Walk All Over You”, has given me quite an insight on the whole album. You go back and forth listening to one song hundred of times, in mono, stereo, left channel, right channel. Everything can count to get it right when you are looking for hints (for your sound to match).
So I started with the same or very similar microphones positions. I just changed slightly the settings of the amp giving more bass, Master to 5 and pre amp back to 7. Guitar volume 10, and tone always 5.
Also, the “console” EQ was different than WAOY. So in the end, changing little things can result in having quite a different sound (I mean, the sound is actually very similar, which will stand of course in the context of the same album sound, which used to happen a lot back in the day and was expected and appreciated).
So remember, some of the defining aspects – for Angus – of Highway To Hell will be:
– 2203 played almost exclusively (rhythm and solos)
– most likely G12Ms for most of the guitar parts
– SVDS on all solos
– Rhythm guitar with tone knob somehow closed, starting at 5 (guitars are all different, … ).
