Which features would THIS community like to have? Update

15 Oct Which features would THIS community like to have? Update

Update as of Oct. the 15th 2010

So, we tried to implement a few new things and “improve” a few other things that were already there. How do you like it (if you can actually spot the differences)?

β€’ PMs: (not Pre-Menstrual Syndrome) You now have Private Messages to write anyone on here. Just go to your profile page (HOW: if you are browsing, please go bottom of the page, right: Site Admin; if instead you just logged in, you will find it on the top right) and on the top, right side you should see “Messages”. The rest should be rather intuitive. EDIT please note: to say that these PMs work in an “advanced” state is like saying that Tiger Woods was a good husband. The PM system lacks many things still; won’t quote your original PM in the answerer’s reply; Will forget the recipient address when you are replying to a PM (LOL: you’ll have to re-type it; luckily, the recipient field is connected with the members database and will search for the members’ names). So PLEASE be patient. This is PM release v 1.2

β€’ We changed a few more things, introducing the possibility for some of you to be “SoloDallas.Net Contributors“. Do I win anything? NO. Am I better than others? No. By being a Contributor, I am just someone who is enabled to write posts here. Posts that have to make sense; be on the whole subject of SoloDallas.net that is, articles about classic rock. That’s it. And posts that should have the ambition of having to be interesting ones πŸ˜›

Anyway. George (SGAce) is now a contributor already. If anyone else of you (Rob?) wants to be one, just ask!

β€’ We made changes to the comments section. I still do not like the idea of a Forum too much. We debated it yesterday, but I was shown that it can easily be counterproductive for both the sake of sd.net and its users/friends. So we decide to make the comments better. Ideally, I think it would be splendid if – under any post written, now by you as a community, too via the “Contributor” mode, a mini, subject-oriented-forum is created each time. I noticed that most of you active members use it, and that’s good. I needed to make it more readable and we are not finished with it, but now it breathes more, more room for the comments. Remember, when you EDIT your comment, you’re given more options. Worth looking at it.

β€’ MEMBERS VIDEOS Performances Section: it’s coming. It will be easy/automatic for any one to post inside the members videos performances section, as we are working to a sort of side box where one just adds the video link and then it goes automatically posted up there among the Performances. Like?

β€’ Single Post Mode View: we tried to make better the reading/viewing experience here, so when you now click on a post to read it/view it, you no longer have the left column visible. It’s been given to the page width. Most of the things have been moved into the right column. This has improved the comments room. Like it? Hope so.

β€’ Other minor invisible improvements. πŸ˜›

NEVER be afraid of asking for improvements.

Love,

Fil

Yep. Been thinking since day one.

Rob for example, had asked about the possibility to have PMs (private messages) among us users (see Rob, haven’t forgotten; tried to implement it myself but failed miserably).

I – ‘nother example – see the comments as a bit limiting for a “open, complete” full exchange among us.

Also I am thinking about the chance of letting you “post” things, but I feel I have to keep control of how this happens yet – until the community really goes on – but I am thinking anyhow to give most active members some kind of “superuser” “powers” (ROFL: I HATE administrators or moderators who feel they have “power” over others. To me, a moderator/administrator/owner is someone who REALLY is a moderate, balanced person in real life. There’s no power in shutting others down) to let them do tasks (what tasks? I have no idea yet!).

Just thinking you know. Because I am seeing some of you posting a ton of things – thank you again – and being into it.

Please “comment away” with ideas about your experience here and how you’d like to see it improved in terms of features (even DESIGN wise).

I was thinking about a forum, too. Maybe now there’s enough of us to enable a connected forum? Some sort of “comment this post” that opens up on a given post I put on and allows for better text indentation, images and video posting, … you know what I am talking about.

Thanks boys πŸ˜€

For those on a budget a used Marshall AVT 20w,50w 0r 100w is ok and cheap enough on eBay. It has a valve pre-amp stage and is much better than a MG series for not much more money. Haze 40w is better again but not cheap.
If you’re in a ‘decent guitar or amp?’ type dilemma then get the guitar! Amp can come later, and by then you’ll be a better player before letting the neighbours have it big style!
You’ll know you’ve succeeded in this when you hear the old fella next door can’t stop himself whistling Back In Black while gardening. Ain’t this what living is really all about!

Lucky you… in my neighborhood, I’d probably get a complaint letter from the association – we got one when I hung a punching bag on the porch, because it was, I quote, “unsightly”.

Very interesting point. Yesterday, while looking around at my favourite online dealer, I found the Marshall MA 50H. 3x ECC83 and 2x EL34 tubes inside. Exactly like the JMP 2204. Would be very interesting to hear this one. Costs about 550 euros, thats less than most used JMP 2204 at ebay. One disadvantage: no master volume, unfortunately.

Hey Fil, just found this article so I though I would move my post here instead. Here it is:

    Hey,Fil.
You know I was thinking a while back about your reviews. I said to myself; β€œThis is all great! Finally a site where I can have vintage gear explained to me!”
But the truth is, I can’t afford many of these items, and I am pretty sure I am not the only one.
I know this should have been in the New Features post but I just got the idea TODAY and thought it was awesome and would really help you out.
What I was thinking is that, because alot of us musicians dont have a lot of money, you could do a budget gear review. Basically reviewing gear thats cheaper and more affordable to people.
Please let me know if you will benefit from this idea or may consider trying it out.
    Cheers,
    Jimmi.

      Jimmi,
it IS a good idea, but the spirit here is not having to test gear in general, like it could be already for many sites that have this. Furthermore, those sites – professional ones – get the gear to test it only, then give it back. I would have to purchase that gear to test it only. You understand that this wouldn’t work. What we do here is, in terms of gear, I test mine, that I carefully collect to uncover some secrets of older rock and roll and if this can be useful, people buy theirs. This is what happened, for example, with the Marshall JMP amplifier, where a few guys bought one after we discussed it here (some others already had one). I have nothing against though individuals like yourself testing and reviwing their own gear here on site, becoming contributors. That way, ANY type of gear can be showcased here helping others when that is the case. That is, the objective here is and will be, not just to show our own gear for the sake of doing so and receiving compliments because we bought it, but getting specific gear useful to uncover some tone secret of the past, golden records and so on. Thanks for your suggestion! πŸ™‚

Thats cool Fil. I just thought that perhaps for people LOOKING to BUY gear who don’t have a lot of money this may be helpful, but I understand what you mean.

Anytime. PLEASE do not feel discouraged if your suggestion didn’t meet immediately its goal. Remember, if YOU think you have something to showcase because it can be useful, whatever its price or nature, do not hesitate to let me know and get contributor status (contributor can write his own posts). However, this has to be very clear from the start, contributor status is not a privilege. It’s just an additional option for the community. I really believe in the spirit of the community, and of this one specifically. I did say it and it’s already showing that I can’t and don’t want to be alone doing everyting here. I need other good folks with similar passion to mine. Seemingly, this is happening. We don’t have to be rushing towards anything, there is time to grow πŸ™‚

                  Jim,
are you looking into a real amp tube, or a “modeler” could grasp your attention, too? I love modelers, it’s not a secret. I think most times than not, good modelers (amplitube, GR4, Avid Eleven, … ) do a better job at recreating a Marshall vintage and modern sound than real amps on the market. I have stated this several times in the past too, and I used to play modelers ONLY for a long time during the past year/two years! So my first choice would go for a modeler. Guitar Rig 4, for example, can be had way cheaper than the prices you are willing to pay. I can’t remember the AU $ conversion rate with US $, but even a vintage or old Marshall JCM800 (for example) could be available. IF must be a real tube amp, I’d go Marshall, period. There is a multitude of used Marshalls that can be had that are simply great amps.

Thanks. I’m currently using a Haze. A lot of people don’t like them and say they don’t have an AC/DC tone. But as you said, “Tone comes from a players minds, hands, and heart.”

Either way I am happy with it. GOt it for around $800. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a vintage like tube amp but don’t got enough cash to buy a cabinet/ head.

If you have ever played one please let me know what you thought. I think alot of people would wonder if its up to standards for an “AC/DC amp”.

                    Cheers,
                    Jimmi.

No way, the Haze is terrific! Let’s get into the Haze right now and see why you thing it doesn’t sound AC/DC. Let me look at its specifications and controls on the net, please hang on. Also, please tell me what guitar you are using with it? Please open another comment (here, anywhere) so that we don’t have this indentation here πŸ˜›

I’d be happy to contribute, though the only thing I have currently are practice solid state amps – Marshall MG10 and a portable plug-in VOX AC30 – doesn’t get more budget than that πŸ™‚

Solid state amps are way cool too. I too have a little solid state amp, the one I played on that “Get AC/DC tone” video, and I played it all summer πŸ™‚ I tried it with a vintage 4×12 cabinet and it was superb. Many times it’s not even the AMP! It’s the guitar signal chain, the speakers and the way we record stuff that won’t satisfy us πŸ™‚ I really would not like you (not you specifically, but in general) to think that what I try to assess is that ONLY tube amps, and only certain models are OK and the rest is crap. Most amplifiers are good to very good. Now, to really nail AC/DC tone with a given amp, that may be a different story, but I am learning continuosly about this too…

Right – for me, these two have been pretty satisfactory – so far the weakest link on the signal chain has been the source anyway (my hands) πŸ™‚ I feel like I have to earn a tube amp by playing better πŸ™‚ and the reviews here so far provide more depth than I’ve found anywhere else; the more, the better.
                    cheers

EL34 is one type of vacuum tube (the most favoured for classic rock) used in the power (or output stage) of Marshall valve amps such as the 70’s JMP. The characteristics of each type of valve i.e EL34, EL84 e.t.c give the amp its particular tone.

The PM feature is a great idea but it’s really difficult to use. You should put it into a more visible place. It’s almost like an easter egg – hidden. πŸ˜€ It should be at the top of every page I visit (not only on the site admin page). And also: I have to type in every username by hand, if I want to write a message… it would be great if a little envelope icon (or something…) appears next to every username at the comments section (and of course if I click it, I want to be able to write to that person, and not to type in his username by hand)

How about a section where users can link great songs containing, blues, rock’n’roll and to a point maybe (Some, early, not Black or Death, Grindcore or stuff like that but the early great metal, not the ”depressive” stuff, but pure great) metal?

Can be everything from Zeppelin, AC/DC, Airbourne, Judas Priest, Bluesbreakers, Hendrix, Eric Clapton, some sort of guitarist performing live, maybe some early Black Sabbath or something, DIO, BB King or other legendary guitarists, or simply great songs you may wanna link, showing people who havent heard that and that song πŸ™‚

I was thinking a section where users can link instead of all over the other videos it might bring some ”order” so to speak, plus it’s easier to find great songs if you’d like, instead of having to check every eventuall comment on every video, and a section where users can talk about what they link, disguss and just listen to great music πŸ™‚

Ok i bring one i found here, this song gives me goose bumps everytime i hear it, Peter Green – The Supernatural

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoasUjXBkm8

In short; a section where users link, listens, talk and disguss great music which periodly isnΒ΄t made nowadays, but made from the years when music was music, when music had ”soul” πŸ™‚

The PM system looks okay to me, i mean its not super luxurious but, but it works.
And a great Idea for the Videos, its really hard to find the right people, that are interested in what you do. This way makes sure that the People who really care about that stuff get to see it.

Not having a forum is ok for me. Would be nice to have one, but on the other side, in the almost 15 years I’m in the net, I never were a forum member. The forum here would be the first I would register for. Having a forum here it would be fine, but if not, its ok too.

Hehe Hagen, well, I could ask my stepdaughter to plug her pink hello kitty stratocaster copy in and play around a bit and send you this one πŸ˜€

16 now, 17 in a few months. She doesn’t like classic rock at all and she doesn’t really play guitar, but there’s a handful of AC/DC songs she likes. Very cute and very clever girl πŸ™‚

Do NOT worry about your playing when posting here. NO one will ever say anything bad. Because I’m a moderator πŸ˜› (and I’ll make the most active users among you moderators, too; though I don’t think we’ll ever see too much traffic here, one never knows)

Hagen, got the amp 2 hours ago. Just go out and buy one. Now! Even with a modern 1960A cabinet it sounds killer. JUST KILLER! AC/DC out of the box. Instantly.

Franz, I suggest a “group buy” and right after, a “group hug”. Both things will make our lives better. I am kidding of course, but this is also my living philosophy πŸ™‚

Franz… finally I get to talk to you today. Seen your messages incoming, but was busy as heck (family, work and then that god damn back in black). Danke for your response. I am furiously curious to see/hear your NEW JMP. JMPs are the greatest amplifiers. I can’t stop using them, looking at them and sniffing them (laughs).
