Update on the SVDS Replica: Production started!

26 May Update on the SVDS Replica: Production started!

Update as per 26th May, please find riginal post below

Dear members,
just want to give you an update on the progress.
Our tech Markus found a few smaller problems on the initial circuit design and had to redo it. Thats bad news basically, but the work was already done when you’re reading this.
Since we have a new circuit now, we want to hear it and test it again together with you all, before we give it into production. This means, another prototype will be made and Fil will
test it and demo it for you.
During the upcoming week, the PCB boards are made, then the prototypes will be assembled by our tech Markus.

Sometimes, you get stuck with just a detail, in this case it’s the replica’s case enclosure. We want it as close as possible to the original, which takes a big effort, because no pre-made industrial case fits our needs. So it will be custom made and printed like the original exclusively for us. We just found a company which will handle the case labelling for us.

So, while it’s silent here, be assured that we’re working on it in the background. We are even testing a decent, not too expensive modern wireless unit that will fit the replica’s needs perfectly, since the replica itself will not contain wireless functionality.

As soon as it makes sense (when we know the final costs and prizes) we will open a prescription list.
Thank you for your patience,
Franz
End update, please find original posting below

Dear members,

before I explain the title of this post, please let me introduce you to Markus.
Markus is a very experienced electronics technician here in Vienna, Austria. He is not only a electronics engineering graduate, but also has a lot of experience in the production of electronic and electrical devices. He builds his own tube amps, he is working on his own line of studio monitor speakers, and in general, his special interest is audio electronics.

Yesterday, Markus took over the job of producing the replica. We both signed his contract and NDA agreements and Markus took over Guido’s fantastic pioneer work and examined an original SVDS.

Proud Markus with SVDS

In the above photo you see a Vega Pro 63. This unit is not functional but its metal case has the exactly same dimensions as the original SVDS, so this one was handed over as a sample in order to reproduce an authentic enclosure for the replica.

So, what are the next steps? Short answer: preparing the batch production.
Long answer: Markus will manually build a handful of prototypes again, exactly like they will be built at the factory. These prototypes will be tested and showcased here.
Upon successful testing, the prototypes will then need to be checked for compliance with the European standards for electronic audio devices. Finally factory production can then start.

Update:Β Markus will also take care of the pedal/stompbox version of the SVDS replica. It will be released after the big (Gold/Deluxe) version but will sound just the same and therefore also just like the SVDS. The exact same process for the big (Gold/Deluxe) version of the SVDS replica will be repeated for the pedal/stompbox version.

We are definitely a big step closer now.

Your SoloDallas team
Fil & Franz

here’s a shot of David Gilmour’s leather guitar strap with a Schaffer Vega Transmitter stapped on to it!

By the way, this is on my site, The Black Strat build, where it’s a project on creating the most accurate replica of David Gilmour’s Famous Black Strat guitar! Please check it out and drop a line!

    banane,
As for the transmitter, are you planning to design the housing exactly as the original?

      Great looking project!

If you want the very best, and last, guitar strap you’ll ever buy, visit Martin Price’s website, hellforleather.tv, and email for the Angus Young guitar strap. Martin is the guitar strap maker for Angus, and can see his handy work when the guitar tech on Live at River Plate speaks about having the straps ‘custom made in England’. It’s a custom order, however same price as the majority of his straps, Β£72.50. I had him add the same pouch and cable management velco/leather straps you see on Angus’ strap. I gave Martin the dimensions of my Line6 G50 transmitter (which is almost the same size as the Pro58/SVDS transmitter), and it is AMAZING.

Softest leather I’ve ever felt, amazing quality, worth every cent. He could charge twice as much and still get away with it, easily.

I met Jeff Banks (the guitar tech) ealier this year and he was telling me about those straps he did say they were good

Also, if you already have a wireless guitar system would you be able to connect that via jack cable to the SVDS replica?

Yes, you can do that. Just connect the wireless output to replica input and from replica output to the amp then.
You said “already a wireless”‘ so I better mention that the replica will not be wireless. Just a input and a output jack.

That’s totally cool Banane, if it it gives that fantastic sound, to me it doesn’t matter if its wireless or not wireless, if I can plug my existing wireless system into it the that’s great!

Cant wait to see more updates πŸ˜€
            Thanks!

It will sound just like the SVDS, in other words: awesome πŸ™‚ We will demo it here, and you will be able to hear it before you decide to buy it or not. But I’m rather sure you’ll buy it πŸ˜‰

Well, we are not rebuilding the wireless part, so no transmitter. Would cost too much and would take too long to develop. We are rebuilding the audio part of transmitter and receiver, the original monitor front output will be the input and the actual output to amp will be on the back.

Exactly, we are not “physically” adding the transmitter as an external part, BECAUSE the transmitter AUDIO circuitry has been embedded into the main box that in the original SVDS, was the receiver. So now we have one whole convenient package, all the AUDIO circuitry in there. Same exact AUDIO circuitry as on the original SVDS πŸ˜€
You guys (including us!) are going to massively DROOL on this. Muahahahha πŸ˜†

THAT picture is terrific. TERRIFIC. THANK YOU!
Will use that. PS Note: Mr. Schaffer’s name spelled wrong πŸ˜†

Mr. Schaffer… seen that??? As you folks can see, this is NOT an “AC/DC – Angus Young” relevant replica only. This replica is dedicated to many, many more musicians’ styles. We have the list of the ones who used it, and it may be appealing to many more than simply us AC/DC fans.
As I always say (even to Mr. Schaffer himself the other day), this “package” replica includes two of the most important “tools” in a box for a guitar player: a boost and a compressor. Little else is needed. This has it.

I spent a minute looking on older posts on the development of the SVDS replica and two things came in mind. I’m not sure if this was already taken into consideration so I apologize in advance. First off, when I found out that this was NOT going to be wireless, I began to realize that a cable is needed. Now for most people, nobody gets a short cable. I have a 25′ cable and was aware that longer cables DO affect the tone. Here’s my point, when wanting to use the SVDS replica, will you be having a way to counteract cable length so it can emulate having the transmitter on you? Second, now the units are both in one housing, will it also be able to emulate distance from transmitter to receiver? I’ll somehow get a hold of a real SVDS for using it’s wireless capabilities but knowing that i’ll be distant from my rig, it’s what got me to think about all the other variables. I hope this helps! I wish all the best to your project and this isn’t something important that you found in your findings.

        David S.

          Thanks, David!
Yes, you need either a cable or use a good wireless device instead.
Emulating distance between transmitter and receiver doesn’t make sense because this simply doesnt affect the tone. The SVDS doesn’t sound different depending on how far you are away. Would be worse if it was like that πŸ™‚

This is a little off topic as well but we need some kind of spot to post questions about songs. I’m trying to figure out the rhythm part of What’s Next To The Moon during the little vibrato solo. Anybody have any idea what Malcolm is doing, I kind of have a clue what is from listening but I would like to know if anyone knows for sure.

Hi and welcome here. We will produce two Replicas: One “Deluxe” version, sounding and looking exactly like the original SVDS. And one pedal-size version, also sounding exactly like the original SVDS.
The Pro63 has the same box as the SVDS, so its box will be a sample for the Replica production. But only its box. The rest will be an exact rebuild of the Audio circuits of the SVDS transmitter and receiver.

im sure it’s been said, but what are the knobs on the replica adjusting compared to the original? The monitor boost and the rear output boost? Does anything on it simulate the the control on the wireless remote type thing?

Just a question, i don’t only play ACDC, Blues or Rock’n’roll but also old school metal that isn’t filled with tons of distortion(it has distortion but i try not to overdo it too much), will the unit also be able to sound good with metal styles like 70s and 80s New wave of british heavy metal kind of sounds?

I think they often would use compressors, boosts and stuff like that back then and because of that it(the unit) sounds so good i just thought if it might fit those periods of Heavy Metal sounds.

Probably yes. Don’t know it for sure, but if you look at all the bands who used the SVDS back then, I think it will sound great there too.

Would be cool, but way too much effort. The wireless stuff would have to fulfill a load of norms and specs. That would need a lot of money to invest which you can only get back with a very high amout of sold units.
Maybe later, depending on our success, but rather not. We’re not Shure or Sennheiser or Line6. Unfortunately πŸ˜‰
