PS The more I think of it, the real thing I was willing to say was “The Touch Of The SVDS” (on any amp it goes into).

I will say it now.

The SVDS and its “magical touch”, Β© Ken Schaffer, NYC.

And you folks want to know what the SVDS user manual (and some ads) used to say? “We beat time and space”.

Boy, wasn’t it real for us. These units have beaten to hell Time and Space. Yes, because 30 years later, they’re still here and working, and making their thing.Β

Wow. Just wow.

See for yourself!

Hi, I managed to scrape together enough cash for a Marshall DSL15H. the trouble is that the Ultra Gain and Clean channel present a problem. The Gain cannot clean up on the Ultra Gain Channel and the Classic Gain hardly breaks up at all. I found the Ultra gain Okay’ish for Walk All Over You movie in Paris, (except for my actual playing ability) and the Classic Gain was just too Clean. So I thought I would make a SHO Circuit as I cannot afford boutique pedals and such, seeing as I am supposed to be a trained electronics engineer I decided to build a SHO circuit and a Krankosaurus with the AMD Mod. (stick with me!) This is where it kind of got strange. I have a Epiphone SG that I have fiddled with and have a Kent Armstrong pickup in the Bridge position which I think sounds great, but lacked that Angus Paris movie sound but better than the original signature Angus Young Gibson SG I own (and love) somehow. Well with the SHO circuit it sounded really good on the Classic (clean) channel on the DSL15H. In fact it gave me what I wanted, a tone/ crunch in between the Classic channel and Ultra Gain Channel. So I was chuffed to bits. However, I also own a Gretsch Electromatic 5422 with filtron pickups. I dont like it very much its my least favorite guitar, (I struggle with Travis picking). BUT, through the Krankosaurus with SHO boost on the end It sounds awsome. It does just about every ACDC sound I can think of, just by tweaking the volume knob. I could not believe it, it was that good. Usually the knobs on that Gretsch do hardly anything. So i think it is some kind of impedance change affecting the sound so well.
Thought I should share as I have been tone chasing Movie in Paris sound since 1989. Seems to me that a Boost is the way to go through a Valve Marshall circuit. I wonder if the Vega was used as a boost on the end of the long cable, that would make sense to me. Although electronically the boost should be applied at the head end (guitar end) but for practical reasons it definitely worked for Angus I guess.
I think I mix up what Malcom and Angus are playing, so I would be playing Malcoms parts on the SG and it not sounding quite right, But with the Gretsch, for me at least it nails it. Any one know where the intro to Movie in Paris is played on the guitar neck? It has had me stumped for a very long time, I think around th 12th fret double stop rapidly picked and swimming in reverb any guidance would be greatly appreciated. i am close but no cigar and there is no tab or discussion anywhere. kindest Regards all, Neil.

How can I get this tone out of my Marshall HFX Full stack?!
    My amp settings, are…
    Crunch Channel
Gain 3(2 is the lowest it’ll go, but it’s too weak at that point)
    Bass 8
    Mid 4
    Treble 5
    Volume 7
    Master ranges from 5-6
As of now I use an MXR ’78 Distortion as a boost, and it’s settings are… Output 11 o’clock, Tone 11 o’ Clock, and no distortion or Crunch button.
As for my guitar it is an Epiphone ES-335 with a DiMarzio Norton in the bridge position which is raised fairly low seeing how it’s quite a powerful PUP, The guitars Volume ranges and the tone is usually between 4 1/2 and 6
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

EVERYTHING the SVDS “touches”, soundwise, becomes “like-able” to my ears. I just love the unit own sound, I can’t stop using it. I was telling directly Mr. Schaffer how I love to turn it on, carefully, every day. I know it’s the same for Franz.

In just a few months from now. We did say this several times – I realize this – but in the mean time, the reverse engineering has been done, schematics drawn, first working prototype has been made etc.
So, a lot has happened. Now Franz has taken charge of the final stages, including second prototype (no hiss) and final production. In a few months and it will be for sale, right here.

Yes, indeed. We said it several times, but things developed in the meantime and of course our goal is to make it perfect at the first approach.
At the end of this week I will meet up with an engineer (not just a tech, but actually an engineer) who will made everything ready for production and even build a few pre-production prototypes for us. These will then be intensively tested and showcased by Fil here for you. Then, after the final approvals the production will start.

Fil, I’m thinking of making a pedalboard, will I be able to place the SVDS replica on it, or will it be much bigger than for example a Boss DD-3 ?

Version One Replica, maybe. It will be a box like the SVDS Receiver, identical (or very close). Will stand up vertically like the EX63 does. So unless you want to place it as is on your board (I don’t see why you shouldn’t), there wouldn’t be another way.
I think it would look cool as hell, “towering up” on the other pedals; additionally, when lit up, will look like the SVDS when it’s on. Orange lit VU meter and red leds.
Version two replica, yep with no doubts, since it will be a stomp box. However, replica two is due later, and it’s likely dependent on the replica one “success or failure” in market terms.

I love Airbourne, they are one of the best new rock n roll bands around but the thing they don’t have is the blues aspect. Joel’s (Lead guitarist) solos are pretty much the same thing on every track.Their songs are chord progressions and they have that driving bass, drums and rhythm sound that I LOVE but they lack in the lead guitarist and they have no blues in them. They are just straight-forward, hard pumping rock n roll.

I’ve seen them live on an open-air concert. Got myself into the third row and they were awesome. not so much musically but they put on a great show and put out loads of energy. Joel even climbed the stage construction and soloed about 12 meters above the ground. The 12 full stack Marshalls helped too. But you can hear his voice getting tired, he doesn’t scream as much as on the album. But they still blew me away. Of course they’re still far from AC/DC – the best show i’ve ever seen. Hmm hope i’m able to see 77 someday.

I LOVE Airbourne, and they are my favorite “current band” as of late, however I hear you on Joel’s live voice.

Brian may scream, but Brian also can really sing.Brian also is very consistent live, which is something Joel needs to perfect as a frontman.

He sounds amazing in Studio, and at times he sounds good live, but when he’s on a bad day, well…poor guy sounds rough, almost a whispering screech.

I honestly think he needs a vocal coach, and quick. If he keeps trying to scream to the point he’s almost hoarse, he’s going to damage his vocals very badly.

If he had the proper singer technique, like Brian has, he’d fair a lot better live and studio. He may recover quickly now,but as the years roll by he might not “heal up” from the long tour and when it comes time to sing in studio,or at all, he’ll be done.

I do have high hopes for Airbourne, and would not want them to change singers, not while Joel is still alive and kickin’ lol.Great guy, frontman, guitarist, tons of energy, stage presence.

I agree, they lack the bluesy stuff in there guitars, but I enjoy the groove and straight up classic rock vibe.Have all their albums (including the 2004 EP)

They’re recording the 3 album now,and I think it’s going to be massive. No Guts. No Glory. was fucking great.

                      My 5 cents:

I love Airbourne, too. For me the best band from 2000’s generation. Love the first EP (Girl Gets Hot and Dirty Angel are my favourites) and also the other two albums (shame that Heads are Gonna Roll and Red Dress Woman were not released on the CD – they are mp3 only).

Regarding the ’77 band, I think this comment I found on YouTube sums it up for me:

“I’m a great fan of AC/DC, but, there’s only ONE AC/DC, no Airbourne, neither ’77. Yeah, these guys rock, but they are a simple copy. Airbourne at least have a bit ofο»Ώ personality, but this is more of the same, AC/DC were, are, and will be the most fuckin’ great rock band of history, but AC/DC not ’77, I’m sorry guys, learn music and create something new.”

My point is – bands like Krokus, Rhino Bucket, Airbourne etc. were/are constantly accused of ripping AC/DC off. But they got their own sound, own style, own personality. They don’t deny that they like and are inspired by AC/DC, but they all brought their own thing in.

Don’t get me wrong, I quite like them and wish them luck, but…

’77 is like (very good) AC/DC cover band playing own songs (similar image, similar gear, similar sound). And that is, in my opinion, their biggest problem on the road to success. AC/DC is their great inspiration and also can be their damnation.

VERY true. The fact that hasn’t emerged enough about AC/DC, is that they were and are full of talent and resources in way MORE than just one aspect.
In the early days, they had brother George and Vanda to produce them. That was fundamental. HOWEVER, both Angus and Malcolm by 17 years of age were already MONSTERS at playing guitar. This is an aspect that doen’t emerge enough, and I am spending these years to underline this often. THERE IS A LOT of skill in the apparently skill-less brothers. “It’s easy, it’s simple” has been said so many times about them. Fucking FALSE!!! That sound, those licks, those skills are majestic. It is very, very hard to reproduce them; that’s one of the reasons of existence of solodallas.com and before this, my youtube account. So, younger musicians, new musicians should approach this VERY carefully, practicing their rock and roll guitar skills VERY carefully. There can NOT be lack of blues if you want to play rock and roll. It’s like father and son. One not there without the other one.
So, for all the new and old people who want to be on the same path/track, THESE considerations have to be made at ALL times. Guitar comes first, always. All the rest is important but secondary. Your personal r’n’r philosopher, SoloDallas πŸ™‚

For me, No Guts. No Glory had great production and that’s what mostly made it. The riffs are really similar to eachother, as opposed to Runnin’ Wild which, in my opinion, hands down beats NGNG originality-wise. I’m yet to obtain the vinyl of RW and the EP which is only available on CD i fear. You don’t come across these things very often in a country as small as Slovenia. I’m hoping i get it when (and if) I go to Australia in a few years. I doubt it’s available anywhere in Europe. Except maybe from private sellers but those copies would probably cost thrice the normal cost or even more.

Hey Fil, I’m sure that you think about this thing again and again – selling the SVDS replica, but in my opinion coming first with the expensive model will not end up in a thrill. Maybe selling the cheapest one (the stomp box model) will do the trick – the guitar players community will hear what a SVDS is, and finally, true “connoisseurs” will get the 1:1 replica, with the orange lit VU meter and all…

ah so the first version might be “like” the SVDS i.e Tower, meter and knobs?

i myself like that design, more sence of feel to it πŸ˜‰

Change “might be” into “will be”. It’s for sure.
We love the shape it had back then, and it will be good on several levels, not increasing the price too much. It will be an almost exact copy of the black box πŸ™‚

We’re ALL beginners when it comes down to playing guitar. The strings. The strings make it a realistic experience ( πŸ˜† ) every single time. I still struggle, and Franz knows it and saw me. We did play together and it was very, very nice. Franz was playing chords, sort of “Ride On” thing. Beautiful.

    Great videos!
Many users here, me too, use amp simulation programs like GutarRig and AmpliTube a lot . Does the SVDS works with “digital” amps as great as with real amps? A further video about that would be a good suggestion. Isn’ it?

    Fil, Franz….
I can’t even express how much this little video was important for me.
I had a nice class on college today, but due to some events and other things that were running around my head, I came back home with a heavy and worried feeling deep in my heart. I was worried… even scared about certain things… That class made me think about things I never stopped to think before. About the future for me, let’s say…. Inside the bus I was feeling like I live in another dimension. Like everything that was around me wasn’t exactly happening. I was lost in my thoughts and worries. I turned on the laptop when I got here, opened SD.com and saw this little new post here. I watched the video and…. Finally a smile came back to my face. I’m telling you: I’m actually crying while I’m writing this.
All the jokes, the Indiana Jones theme, your crazy laugh right before you start playing… I remembered life is made of small and happy moments…. and that I don’t need to worry so much. This made my day, I’m telling you. Sorry if this sounded too over-sentimental or off-topic, but… sigh…. give me a few minutes to think of what I have to write next….
All I can say for now is… THANK YOU for doing this. THANK YOU!

AndrΓ©!!!! THESE comments are actually VERY welcome here.
If you only knew, how all of us had terrible moments in our lives.
I always told you how smart you are: SMART.
You’re like what, 17??? And you play like you play, you speak how you speak (we’ve had several exchanges during the years, specifically this last year).
Cheer up little brother of ours. It IS a tough world out there, but you’ll make it out. I bet my money on it.
BTW, I am just bouncing another test I just made with those little shit amps from Marshall, you know the TOYS ones that actually play??? THAT ONE lol
      And I’m loving it!!!!!!!

Hey AndrΓ©, being a teenager is a tricky period in life, that’s just how it is. All these thoughts about the future and so on, we “older gang” have all been there and can recognize your emotions. But as I told you many times, you have lots of potential and is a smart guy, just stick to your principles and keep doing things the way to do. It will sort out itself πŸ™‚

Hey Andre – like Fil and Jonas said (and I can see from all the online stuff you created), you are a smart, talented, and all-around nice guy.
I’ll tell you, we all have ups and downs, and if you can lift yourself up from a major down by recognizing little things in life that make you happy, pat yourself in the back, cause you’ve got something in you that helps you overcome adversity in a positive way. Life will throw lemons at you, and if you know how to use your own squeezer, you’ll make lemonades πŸ™‚

It’s the SVDS. If you can still hear how that amp works without; I have that video I shot last year in the big room, I’ll post it here later. NOT very good πŸ˜†
But the SVDS KICKS THE SCHEISSER out of anything it goes into, and the X10 transmitter has the best compressor I ever tried on a guitar.

Oh you bet! See, part of my screen name has always been “Solo”. But it wasn’t at all guitar related. It was “Han Solo”.
I was always told I look a bit like Harrison Ford, and coincidence is that he’s my favorite actor. I also like his persona, his behavior, the roles he acted etc.
Indiana Jones I always loved as well.
So right now, son (my son) and I are majorly into Indiana Jones stuff. The hats you see are replica movie props; Lorenzo (son) and I play the heck out of those, adventure and such. That’s why I sort of “forced” (LOL) Franz into it. At first, Franz looked at me like “WTF”. Then he laughed it up. And we went for it πŸ™‚
