I started playing guitar back in '08 and never slowed down since. My name's Justin and I'm 14. The only genre of music i play is classic rock. I'm trying to contribute to that Back in Black tone that we all love. When I'm not on here I'm either at home recording or riding my horses.

I think I know how angus plays the little fast licks in Back in Black around 2:11 or 2:12 and after like 2:16. It’s a fast down pick 12th fret e string to a fast up pick pull off from 15 to 12 on the B. Then he actually SWEEP picks. That is the key. But in order to get the cleanliness picking of the lick you have to hold these last notes separately. But is much easier to start practicing it by doing that first part then a down stroke on the 14 G then hold the 12 B and G simultaneously. Here’s the sweep pick. You down pick the 14 G and the 12 B in a strumming motion then since they’re simultaneously being held you up pick the 12 G and then the little slight pause and then into the 14 G bend lick. The second fast lick is the same but after the 12 G up pick you down pick the 14 D with vibrato and slide down obviously.

It might not be considered sweep picking but that has to be the up and down pick motions bc that’s the only way you can get the timing right. This lick here just proves how tight Angus’s playing is and his ability to sweep pick. And I didn’t mean a pause after the first lick but he holds the 14 G bend just a little bit before continuing into that lick.

Also if your used to picking every note out like me then it’s goin to be very hard for you to make the transition to this way but I think it is the right way. I think that Fil will think the same thing when he tries this. The pull off in the lick can be played like I said or you could up pick 12 e then down the 15 then up the 12. But I honestly think its a pull off there bc of the timing.

I’ve struggled with picking and fingering for this lick (and several others in Angus’ library) for a long time and I still am far from getting it fast and clean. So it’s nice to hear how others play it; I need to try the way you describe, I currently go like this:
          down pick e 12th fret
          up pick b 15th fret, and pull-off b 15th-12th
continue up motion to pick G 14th fret
          down pick b 12th fret
          up pick G 12th fret
          down pick G 14th
          Cheers

yes that’s how I use to play this lick except no pull off just pick every note. But to get every nuance of it I think the sweep pick gets that sound you hear on the record. You know like you can hear that pick sound and if you are familiar with sweep picking that’s how it sounds. Just listen to the first one at 2:11 over and over and I think you will be able to hear the sweep. But like I said it’s really hard especially if you think about it to make the transition from playin it one way to another way but every now and then you won’t really think about it and you’ll sweep it right and you’ll see that gets the timing and the pick sound from the original. You do know what I mean by the pick sound right? I may not be making that sound clear enough. But one thing to practice it like this you can practice the 14 G 12 B and G sweep alone just to get it down.

I know you said its nice to hear how others play it but I played just as you described until last night and idk how but I was jamming the solo and I just subconsciously played it the way I described like it was meant to be played that way. And that time it sounded exactly like Angus even down to hearing how the pick hits the strings. How the pick hits the strings is how I would describe the pick sound. The sweep is the only way I’ve ever achieved that sound. I’m curious to know what Fil thinks of this as he plays it just like you described (i think)or he might pick every note out like I did but I know he don’t sweep pick it. I swear though that this lick makes this solo one of the hardest to play.

I seem to learn a solo very fast. I took music for the violin when I was little and I think that has helped my timing a lot. It’s also helped me to Play by ear. What I mean by a perfected version is that I have a perfected version now. I only practiced this solo 30 min to an hour for this. I listened to it carefully last night and if I dont make a stupid mistake I have it very close to perfected but I will let you guys be the judge of that.

Here lately I’ve really started to try and perfect the timing on the solos I know. I think some more videos to come will probably be The Jack, TNT, and Ride On.

I don’t know what happened just watch it on YouTube. I was goin for the tone as I dont know the solo note for note but the parts I do I tried to perfect the timing as Fil would do also. I was really just trying capture this classic tone.

Hello mate, repaired the link. You posted a “m.youtube.com” URL which isn’t recognized by the youtube embedding, that’s why the video didn’t show up ๐Ÿ™‚
