SoloDallas’ “Back In Rack” (lol) With Avid’s Eleven Rack™

24 Mar SoloDallas’ “Back In Rack” (lol) With Avid’s Eleven Rack™

Well,

you haven’t seen me for two days, have you?

Certainly you couldn’t care less, I know, and you’re right 🙂

But I was working on this “tune”, if we can call it so (and I don’t know).

Thing is, that last sunday Avid’s Mr. Chris Townsend had gotten in touch with me regarding my use of Eleven Rack. He had seen a couple of my videos (maybe less) and he said he liked them. So he said that they would give me a beta version in advance to the General Availability for the public of the latest update for the Eleven Rack (it’s a pay-for update and they gave me a perfectly working beta for free!).

Eleven Rack is a splendid piece of Hardware and Software – a modeler, they call it – that emulates the whole signal path from guitar to “tape” (hard disk), that is, amplifier, effects, cabinets, microphones and many super cool other functions. We had talked about it a bit when I was using it so much last summer.

Mr. Townsend and his Team just released a much awaited update to the software (firmware) of the machine, that allows for even more things than before, with new amps, effects and… speaker breakup.

See, a very important thing with Marshall – but any other type of driven heads and cabinets – is that its speakers also “break up” (i.e., distort) to the incredible power of its amps. That additional drive/distortion is an important part/component of the final tone that we hear and love on all records.

So they added it. They had to rework the internal algorythms, as it is a very calculus (CPU) intensive operation. So it hadn’t been possible to squeeze it in earlier. They now did it, and Mr. Townsend kindly asked me to test it.

Understand my joy and excitement: speaker breakup is one of my most desireable features to achieve, as I – with an attenuator – rarely can achieve it with my real amps and cabinets. I try and simulate it adding a lot of bass on the amp head (and then taking it away in post equalization) but I don’t know what I really achieve (laughs).

So I did this little thing here. I had a blast. A very intese one, as it took me two days of work to do, but I owed it to them.

Judge for yourself what you think of their “sound”. I used exclusively their model of Plexi 50W (I think it’s a 1987) that I boosted with a compressor in front of it (a modeled compressor, inside Eleven Rack) as I now do with my Marshalls. Cabinet used is a 25w 4×12 and microphone is an U67 off axis. Basically, exactly how I do it for real here.

I love the result. Gave me a chance – because of its ease of use, its immediacy of operation, interface and straight design (always wanted to tell them how I love the design of the Rack, it’s SO intuitive) – to do my thing thowing in this two minutes of rock of mine.

Details will follow (now I need to eat!)

Uhhhh Damn you fil, you know I have a soft spot for that old White SG don’t you lol. I’m glad you broke it out. To my ears it has a slightly thinner” sound and it sounds really cool for various things. It’s a 67 is it not? When I was buying my vnitage SG’s I did not have the fortune of finding a guitar like that one in white, don’t see many of them out of the case. TBH I think people prefeer the sound of other years therefore making this one obscure….fine by me…now if to only find one as cool as yours.

Sounds great, was fun to play along with.

One can see here, you’re a real musician. Very cool video Fil, you can be proud 🙂
The ElevenRack seems to be a cool piece of Hard/Software. Especially because it makes the recoding work much easier. On the other side, I won’t miss the feeling of having a real Marshall back at me 🙂

Wow Fil, you really busted out just about everything to make this video. The little nuances of each guitar are there too, assuming you didnt change the settings between guitars too much 🙂

Its totally badass to see the Gretsch and the bass come out from behind the camera, that really makes everything feel super complete.

I would really love to see you do a tutorial along the lines of how you solo like you do in this video. Like, I can compose little diddily-bits on the rhythm and complete that, but if I put a solo in there, I only know two or three places on the neck that I can really use for any given key. I write little lullabies and such for my friends here at college, and I always record the soft rhythm and background with my gretsch, and then often put a short flow-y solo over part of it, but its never as versatile as I would like it to be. Even if it was just a video of your hands with no talking, I would much appreciate it.

Wow, YES bravo! Dusk was in there too. I used it as a tambourine lol (/32th strumming). And I have been meaning to do a tutorial about soloing for years… now that we have sd.net, I will do it here 🙂

Hey Fil, I’ve had a go working out the chords; is it “A-G note-A-G-D-G-D” (x12), followed by “C-G-D” (x2), then the whole thing repeated, and finally ending on an A chord?

Sorry if it’s horribly wrong or I’ve confused you, I’m still a newbie trying to train his ears at this stage.

Alex, no need to be sorry. There’s no uber skill here at solodallas. All hard work. You are actually… spot on!
A (chord) G (note) bend towards A (note) then play A (chord)
      G (chord) D (Chord) – G G (chords and number of strums) D , etc.
      Then there’s
      E F# (notes) G (chord) D (chord) A (chord)

      Then chorus (lol) is
C (chord – done open C hord on left guitar; power chord on right guitar) G (chord) D (chord) A (chord) and right away, C A C A C (notes) A (chord) and then repeat

      🙂

Gah, I knew there was an A chord in the chorus, but I thought it just sounded good with the progression instead of being there! Lol, oh well, I’m sure I’ll get better with practice.

Wow, I am definately going to learn this. Best thing I’ve heard/seen all day 🙂

I swear, at the beginning I was like “Hm, what song is he covering this time? Sounds familiar…” only to find out it was an original xD You have captured the feeling and soul of AC/DC very well, I only hope that I can achieve the same thing too.

Actually, the drums is the only thing I didn’t do: it’s a free loop of AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” I found on the net.
If you listen to it, the drums are You Shook Me All Night Long’s!

PS I always liked tons the rack. For me, it’s the best modeler out there, surpassing by heaps Guitar Rig and even the more expensive AxeFX. But it’s my personal opinion only 🙂 I have to say it really sounds astonishing. I couldn’t tell it from real Marshalls here. The new speaker breakup function is superb. They are incredible people.
