Hey guys! Thanks so much! That is an amp a marshall I modified for someone. I do both that and do ground up builds in both 50-100w versions.
The guitar is a northern ash strat body with a dimarzio super distortion pickup plugged straight in. the volume on the was at tv level in the clip. I have spent much time building and modifying amps and part of my quest was to get the early van halen tone without peeling paint. My amps/mods get this tone at any volume level you choose.
I used a sm57 on a marshall cab with green backs into protocols and added verb after the fact.
For those that think/associate Edward with a 5150 I would imagine haven’t really heard early van halen much. He used a 1968 marshall plexi and in actuality im sure he used many late 60’s and late 70’s marshalls as well. His contribution to tone really happens pre Sammy hagar. Anything before that was a true gift to rock and roll and the rock guitar player. With his feel, phrasing and tone he has contributed a lot to rock and roll and the electric guitar.
Mark I would like to mod5 my Metro 50 1987 circuit. I put in dual footswitchable Larmars in but do I need to add the 2204 preamp vol also? In other words make it a 2204. Please feel free to email if you would like.
Wow, it seriously kicks ass… To me it sounds excatly like (early days) eddie van halen…. I love it! Great job ;B. It’s the first i hear someone who can emulate perfectly his feeling and his tone. Can you describe your gear?
btw, as far as I know, Van Halen uses 5150 heads. But I have seen many attempts on youtube to nail the EVH tone with plexis. Can someone explain this to me? Did Van Halen use plexis? I always saw him with 5150, and also, his signature amp is based on a 5150 too. Then why plexi ?
I was really shocked btw, when I first read that he uses 5150 heads :O Before that, I haven’t read anything about him, I just heard a few songs from him, and only from the sound, it was obvious to me that I’m hearing a plexi, boosted to f*in hell. And when I noticed that he uses a 5150, I was like: WHAAAT? :O
😀
I feel it. thanks so much. the vibe here feels real good and Filippo is my kind of player. its all about the passion and excitement of the guitar, music and communicating through that. many guitar players on the planet, not many that get that.

Posted at 16:45h, 29 MayYeah, I like a few Hagar era songs, but the David Lee Roth era is where it’s at in terms of Van Halen’s classic sound.
His tone on those albums was unreal,so smooth and powerful.
One of my favorite tones.

Posted at 21:42h, 27 MayYeah, from what I understand, all of his classic tone is 100% Marshall. He only started using 5150s once he got endorsed.
