I am silent, but that doesn’t mean I am not working. Hectically, actually (replica Schaffer, performances, new ideas, etc.).
I have studied more in depth and tried more experiments.
Here’s my latest attempt.
Hoping you’ll enjoy it,
Fil π
Back in Black Cetec Vega FRONT Boost Latest Attempt
PS It was recorded with the Cetec Vega – not the Schaffer – as both my working units are at the lab!

Posted at 22:40h, 10 OctoberFil, I don’t suppose you can remember your settings for this can you? (I’m hoping you keep notes) I know you’ve improved on it since but it’s still pretty damn good and a nice starting reference for me. Cheers π

Posted at 12:34h, 11 OctoberI do remember Rob. Presence 0, Bass 2, Mids 3-4 (I now suggest even 0 with the Cetecs/SVDS: the Vegas introduce a lot of mids). Treble 5. Volume 7.
Guitar volume 7-8; guitar tone should be brought down to 6-7

Posted at 13:00h, 11 OctoberThanking you. I noticed the increased treble frequencies but thought it was more towards the top than mid but I’d fried my ears, so will now listen more acutely. Will take this on-board.

Posted at 15:33h, 14 SeptemberHello Mr Solodallas!
You’re Angus it’s amazin’!!
I would try to play with the Cetec Vega but what do you recommend as Cetec receiver ?

Posted at 21:00h, 14 SeptemberHello mate, I would wait for the replica of the real wireless Angus used back then. Will be even more great π
gallanman
Posted at 22:47h, 14 Septemberyep!!
I will follow your advice and watch news from the replica.
But I’m curious what modifications will be made. The replica is based on the Cetec Vega r42?
Thank’s a lot to answer me

Posted at 22:51h, 14 SeptemberAnytime, mate π
No, the replica is based on the original used by Angus back then. See here: http://www.solodallas.net/more-information-on-the-original-schaffer-vega-diversity/
Fil has two of them, currently at his tech.

Posted at 23:09h, 14 SeptemberYeah! Very beautiful item of Ac/dc’s gear!
Do you think has a possibilty to make some units when the Shaffer Vega’s replica will complete as the amp used by Phil X?
Sorry for my old english I’m a french guy^^

Posted at 10:13h, 15 SeptemberI’m not sure if I got you right on this, but it will be just like a pedal, though the best one for us AC/DC fans π No amp, just a pedal.

Posted at 13:16h, 14 SeptemberExcellent !! You have THE sound and THE feeling, Congratulation and thank you !

Posted at 10:53h, 14 Septembergreat playing!!! you become more angus every day!!! π
ps…. any updates on the solo tutorial π
SoloDallas
Posted at 11:02h, 14 SeptemberWell I was waiting for THIS sound to happen. Now that I am closer, the tutorial is closer lol
PS
If anyone is wondering if this device (Cetec/Schaffer) make you play differently the answer is… yes. It’s easier to play. Might be due to the added drive and or compression, but it’s easier. In fact, I am barely brushing the strings since I have had these units…. good sign don’t you think? π

Posted at 17:09h, 15 SeptemberThanks a ton…. I’ve tried learning the solo myself by watching your cover. I’m getting most of the notes right, but just as you said, its not just the notes, its the tone and playing style which is equally important. π
So, i am trying my best to pull it off, but i still need your detailed and VERY HELPFUL advice π
cheers dude!!! π

Posted at 21:03h, 13 SeptemberIt’s very close, Fil! π The only thing I can hear is that it’s a little “boxy” sounding. Maybe you should back off the 400-600hz territory a bit. But otherwise, it’s very nice! π I couldn’t achieve this tone this close
SoloDallas
Posted at 21:43h, 13 SeptemberAhhh. you went right to the weak spot: good ears!
Well Adam, if I did take out in that range (I may try, if I can recover the disk – Lacie – that right after this thing died on me) the body of the sound would suffer. THAT sound – boxy – is unfortunately the sound of my room lol It’s a freaking box!
π

Posted at 23:36h, 13 SeptemberPut it in the fridge for some hours, that helps in some rare cases. And if the disk mounts again, copy like mad before it gets warm again π
SoloDallas
Posted at 23:40h, 13 SeptemberWhat? Going to do it now!!!
banane
Posted at 23:45h, 13 SeptemberSounds esoteric, but helps when the disk just got too disadjusted. Does not help when the drive makes grinding noises. When it’s clicking a lot, then maybe π
SoloDallas
Posted at 23:46h, 13 SeptemberI love esoteric stuff lol
rjofig
Posted at 00:40h, 14 SeptemberOh, then while you are at it, place the disk facing north, and put a pyramid and a crystal on top of it π
banane
Posted at 07:07h, 14 SeptemberWould butter and a pair of hot dogs do it too? π
SoloDallas
Posted at 23:45h, 13 SeptemberOkay, it’s in the fridge now, will pick it up tomorrow morning lol Franz, I was thinking – if you still have it – can you post yourself (within the post) that previous file I had sent you? It’s not the same take and not the same eq (but close) and there wasn’t the Ampex emulation there, but I was thinking that several of our friends here might be willing to do their own equalization with it? π
banane
Posted at 23:49h, 13 SeptemberDon’t put it by accident on your toast then, lol π
Yes, I still have everything. Will post it tomorrow morning, going to bed now π
SoloDallas
Posted at 23:51h, 13 SeptemberOk, sleep well π
banane
Posted at 07:05h, 14 SeptemberThanks π Slept like a baby, just a few hours too little.
Ok, the previous one would be the “bib 4 Angus.mp3”, is that the correct one?

Posted at 00:02h, 14 September:O Ive never heard of that solution before. I will remember this in case I need it
banane
Posted at 07:18h, 14 SeptemberOh well, its really not a general solution for this problem, most disks die because of damaged mechanics. But sometimes, especially in the summer when a well used disk ran for hours, it gets de-adjusted so much that it cant calibrate itself anymore. When i worked in a bigger company, there was at least one workstation disk failure per week, and this helped sometimes to get the disk working again one more time.
When you hear the disk rotating and a continous clicking, it might work eventually. The clicking comes from the reading mechanism trying to recalibrate.
But again, most times it won’t work.

Posted at 11:04h, 14 SeptemberDIsk is gone, won’t mount. I do hear the sounds of attempts to start the drive (Lacie 500 GB) but it won’t do it. I lost this performance and the settings, which is not a big deal. I have been using my ears exclusively, will find it again π
banane
Posted at 11:13h, 14 SeptemberOk, then probably the spindle motor is gone. Out of luck then π

Posted at 19:49h, 13 SeptemberFil, what do you mean by “please”? π I am excited to listen to it!

Posted at 19:44h, 13 SeptemberDon’t know what to say…
great job Fil…
Can’t wait for the pedal to come out π

Posted at 19:06h, 13 SeptemberWHY DID I CLICK ON THIS WHILE IM IN CLASS?!
*chills out*
I cant listen until I get home. And then I will listen over and over. I cant wait!

Posted at 19:10h, 13 SeptemberJake you let me know how you like it or not?
headwhop26
Posted at 20:45h, 13 SeptemberI was very much blown away. Usually when I listen to these, I load it up, listen to it on my dinky laptop speakers, then on my external speakers, and then on my headphones– but I always turn around and close my eyes when Im listening (it helps create the effect for me that im just listening to it on my itunes or something π )
I honestly could not tell the difference between the album track and yours. Usually i can hear just a bit of those wily frequencies jump out on the A chord of the main riff, and as Rob said, the G chord is just the same. I suppose it is that compression that keeps everything in check, it adds that sugary sweetness to the sound.
I’d love to see the waveform of your track, I’ll bet it looks nearly identical to the original. Your guitar rings almost exactly the same way Angus’ does. There were two or three times where the E sounded a little squashed in the riff, but everything else SANG.
B-E-A-Utiful.

Posted at 21:45h, 13 SeptemberPS If I can mount the disk unit again, I will single out my guitar and post it here for those who want to hear it/experiment with it π

Posted at 22:17h, 13 SeptemberHey Fil, that’d be neat. Maybe we can learn something about vibratos from the waveform π
Great playing and awesome tone as usual, sir! Cheers,
Renato
nitroangus23
Posted at 22:36h, 13 SeptemberOh please!!
I’d love to hear this tone by it’s self, lol
An isolated Fil track?? Heck yeah!!!
haha (Experiment I shall!! π

Posted at 23:58h, 13 SeptemberI second this motion
ar2619Rob
Posted at 19:05h, 13 SeptemberFor me this song has a few key points that I hear when being critical, one of them is the open strings of the G chord in the chorus and this is right there – perfect- as it should be. Also the bends and vibrato on the third string throughout the solo, sometimes previously I hear just a tiny difference. I have never heard the melody such as this before, the solo and outro sound spot on for me.
I think there are a few boosts that will do ok but for me the compression of the vega is absolutely crucial and the only way to nail this tone regardless of whatever guitars amps and speakers one may have. Bang On Target Buddy. π

Posted at 19:10h, 13 SeptemberWas hoping you’d listen to this. I know “your ears” lol
Thank you π And yes, exactly what you said and how you said it: “that” compressor!
