Playing with self-made backing track – Updated

19 Oct Playing with self-made backing track – Updated

Little update as of Oct. the 19th 2010.

I am always experimenting as soon as I have a minute available, so I tried what follows.

Now, one thing that also intrigues me immensely is “Powerage” and LTBR tone. Both of them.

So I replayed rhythm and re-soloed this track trying to capture a bit of that spirit, although re-listening to this it sounds more Flick of the Switch-ish probably. Don’t know, can’t say. The delay I put on the solo guitar was meant to be more LTBR-ish.

Now, the interesting – maybe – thing is the fact that I think Angus on LTBR was “overloading” the input channel of his amplifier somehow. NOT with a distortion pedal, but more with pure “volume boost”, so basically a unit of some sort (might be already the Schaffer-Vega Diversity Systtem, that had a “boost” feature on the unit that would in fact “volume boost” the input signal). Might have been anything. So what I did, is to use a pedal I have (and will show to you) that has “volume boost” only, NO gain! No dirt here: just volume. It’s the same as the famous “Klon” pedal, which I also have and tried prior to this other one. But this one is a little more “colored” and I liked it more.

I used the lower input of my 2203 (the 100 watt Master Volume Lead) and blasted the volume of the pedal to overload the Marshall input signal. This is the result, both on the rhythm guitars and the solo.

A lot more has to be experimented here. The cabinet I used this time is a different one. Remember my reissue cabinet 1960B? Well, I always said it was loaded with V30s (Vintage 30s, 65 watts) but it wasn’t, fool me. It was reissues greenbacks! They’ve always been in there for all these years and I had no idea lol. So anyway I opened up the cabinet and loaded it with 1977 Rola (blackbacks) G12Ms (25 watts) from 197something. This is also what it sounds like 😀

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I replayed the solo (dallas) thing, with a different guitar and slightly different settings. Wanted to grasp a little more vintage vibe and used the ’71 (I also replayed the bass line).

Also, I am about to start shooting tutorials again, so this is a little experiment with the camera (another one) the sync and so on. Seems it’s worked well.

Additionally, you know I tend to be as “transparent” as possible, because as I experiment and study further, I kind of “want to do it with you” and so here I am in all my goofy-ness.

Heh.

I haven’t “mastered” the audio here, so this is what it sounds like right after bouncing it to the disk. The “mastering” process is additional sound editing that’s usually done by the record producers. There are a number of compression and equalization processes that are done. I usually use the plugin “iZiotope” to do it, but I was afraid that it wouldn’t sync with the video after further processing, and so I left it “as is”.

I think it resembles – intentionally – a bit of Let There Be Rock (soundwise) at times. It’s milliseconds of resemblance (laughs). Especially for the lead guitar, the way I dialed it in (intentionally).

This is an initial setup for further videos – I will use much better framing and positioning of the camera, I think it may work (what do you think). Naturally the tutorials will be more close up on the guitar.

Video missing for now, sorry…

In circa an hour time, you can do lots of things with this gear. You, me, all of us.

This has been played with the MV 100 watt. Great amp. Guitars all all the same, Angus Young Signature. So to test the things a bit together. Heh.

Recorded with the AT4047, close up, literally attached to the centre of the speaker.

Backing track (for you to mess with, exercise, practice: HAPPY HALLOWEEN!)

Is it AC/DC-ish? Oh I don’t know. You decide 😛

Let’s try this: LINK to the above file. Does it work (to download)?

Ne (yes, in Greek if I remember properly). Keep in mind this is modded George. Presence 8 Bass 7 Middle 4 Treble 7 Preamp 10 Master 2 (I think, but it wasn’t loud, it was “bedroom level”).
Also, I added euqalization in post; that changes things. You want the equalization image?

Oki, let me get the Eq for you (will send it to you via email, it’s quicker, unless more folks want it). I am going to shoot the guts pics (better than the guts I posted in the original thread for this amp; have you seen those?) asap. Got another cabinet this morning, but only two speakers are working. Transportation ruined something. Going to have to open it up. I will take the inner guts of the amps for you, no worries 😀

    DOWNLOADING TRICK :)

Hey guys, there is a little trick that I used to download media stuff like this from the Net:

Most media files embedded into a web page, once played, goes into a temporary directory belonging to your browser. In my case (I’m using Opera and Vista) the directory is located at “C:\Users\Radu\AppData\Local\Opera\Opera\cache\sesn”. There I can find a lot of files (i.e. “opr1U2AH.tmp”. Just find larger files, change the extension from “tmp” to flv (if you expect a video) or “mp3″ if you expect an audio…and this is it.

Just look for the urls of the mp3s at the source code of the page and download it then. For example, a small free program named “wget” (available for Linux, Mac and Windows) can do this .

Found it in the code but I can only get it to “play only” in windows media player now. Still can’t figure out a way to save into my computer. I’ll have to look into that program or something tomorrow if Fil can’t send it to me.

Bed time for me here. Thanx Man. :-)

Is it AC/DC ish??? Is that a joke question? Of course it must be!!! 😉 You’ve had their style nailed for a long time. It’s why we all watch, envy and most importantly learn from you. I’m sure every one of us can’t show the appreciation we have for your giving nature. (sappy I know) Anyway this is a perfect backing track. I’lll download and mess around with it for sure. Keep ’em coming Fil.

Two more tests for the near future.. JMP’s with g12h30’s and MV in solos.. lets see what are we going to hear.

I believe that for some songs they used either NMV or MV amps. It needs tests of course to prove it.

I am prepering two posts but it takes time.. One of them is which amps did they use (AC/DC) in each tour from 1975 -1982.. BUT from what i found allready keep pushing the NMV… especially for the live sound..

You know how long it will take until the next ACDC album )-: And until that time, you have to give us a lot new ACDC songs ((-:

You must have read my mind then. My objective, here at solodallas.net, is to make music – ours – and make backing tracks – AC/DC’s and other bands’ – like never no one else has made before. THE backing tracks. I hope I won’t go to jail. It’s illegal (unless I pay for the copyrights, which I may do)

        Posted at 22:22h, 17 October

oh yes ?? This is illegal ?? Okaay……as long as you make your own backing tracks to make us happy…hahaha
Yes, making music is big fun thing !!
I´m looking now for a rockband where i can play my SG. Not a ACDC coverband, there are sooooooo many out there. I`m looking for classic or hardrockband, no metal at all !!!
Yeees, go on with your backing tracks and stuff like that. Your sound is absolutely great now !!

          Posted at 10:10h, 18 October

AC/DC coverbands are rarely interesting. It’s too tough to put together great musicians that will render the real feeling. This is why I gave up playing AC/DC with other musicians. Unless it’s professionals, but even then, AC/DC timing is hard for anyone, even pro’s. ANY band will improve your playing, any genre you play. Playing with a band improves a number of qualities such as:
          • forces you to LISTEN to other players
          • interaction (musically) with other human beings
          • playing at home and playing in a rehearsal room are two completely different things. Your hands and whole body will suffer and you’ll feel sore just like if you went to the gym
          • you’ll have to use your gear differently, in the real way, making realistic sounds, etc.

There’s at least a warning: many folks just don’t know how to interact (musically and psychologically) with each other. This causes attrition. It’s part of the game. One is too loud, another one won’t agree on anything, … it’s complex. Musical skills at times are worth nothing if HUMAN behavior doesn’t fall into proper place. A common objective is fundamental.

You don’t even know how excited I am for the next/last :( album and hopefully a tour! I became a huge AC/DC fan 3 years ago, right before Black Ice came out, and was unable to go to any of their shows in Philly… I’ve been tossing around the idea of paying to meet the band, and am positive about front-row seats IF they tour. Money is not an issue at all at this point; I’m going to go all out if they tour.

BTW Fil, your site is starting to transform into something really cool. A lot of it is almost unreal… It’s hard to imagine that not too long ago you were simply posting fantastic and correct performance videos on Youtube. Now you’re stepping up to a totally different level with everything you have going on now. I really enjoyed this original riff, keep chuggin’ away, man!!!

Good summarization of yours of solodallas.net
I still feel like we’re only “scratching the surface” with all of these contents. I have high ambitions for solodallas.net and our community. I don’t see another place like this one, so focused and so tight on these things. I hope the site will make some money somehow in the future, to help me cope with costs (and hopefully, allowing me to purchase more gear for further experimenting). Thanks for your appreciation :)

sounds like 80’s AC/DC to me. Like flick of the switch, fly on the wall, who made who, etc. very nice. I’ll practice “all night long” with this 😀

Absolutely. Especially the track with the solo. Because there’s reverb underneath it, and that was typically ’80 :)
