So exciting, very happy for you Fil! I am floored that Angus was aware and wanting the replica before hand.

Hope it makes it onto the record!

Hey brother!!! Listen carefully, and I mean, carefully: there are GOOD chances the TSR makes it onto the album and… later. I can’t speak of this – wouldn’t be fair. But suffice what I replied to you here and now, no? Good chances, pretty good chances it ends up into the album for some parts. There, said it.

Hahaha. Well, I played a bit his guitars – and he showed me an A chord for Back in Black – but we couldn’t play together, there was no time. They are naturally on a tight schedule as they are making the new album. Steve was also there, I met him and shook hands with him. They are a terrific kin, all of them. Mrs. Hellen cooked for all – we were invited and I personally ate next to Angus and Mrs. Hellen. I mean, I had Angus to my left and Mrs. Hellen to my right. I had to pinch myself several times. Will write all about this. Love, Fil!

I’ll take the edge off of you all about this question: YES he did. Actually, the story is even better than this. Both Angus himself and his wife, Ellen, have mentioned it to me personally (I was lucky enough to speak to Ellen for an entire hour, while Ken spoke to Angus just like an old friend – which they are in fact): Angus wanted it (yes, get ready to faint). He knew of it. He told me he had read about it somewhere, and he wanted it. Later Ellen told me that he was asking where to get one. So when Ken proposed to meet, he accepted immediately and asked that the replica be delivered directly at the studio (as we did, in person πŸ˜› ). He held it and appreciated its feel; he told this right away to Ken and me.

I saw them in Stockholm when Stevie was covering for Mal. It was kept a secret back then and I didn’t spot it, so yes – he will do a great job.

In fact, his own group (Starfighters) had two quite decent albums. I have them both on vinyl :-), a bunch of songs are really good.

Mate, as far as I know, he filled in for Malcolm only during the North American leg of BUYV Tour in 1988.

Malcolm did the whole European Tour (which preceded the American one).

And as far as I am concerned, those two Starfighters’ albums are GREAT πŸ™‚ They stood the test of time and if released nowadays, would be revered as classics.

Hmmm…. Is that so ? I really don’t know. I heard long afterwards that Stevie covered for Malcolm during the tour. I guess I haven’t seen him then :-D. But who can tell, they used to be very similar looking.

Agree. It’s a shame the Starfighters albums can’t be had in CD format.

Actually, those 2 albums were released on CD (around 2006 I think) by High Vaultage Records.

Try amazon. They come with all singles as bonus. The only track missing is the last one on the 2nd album (Great White Telephone), don’t know why they omitted this funny as hell track.

A few tweets I’ve seen in the last day. One of Angus on the streets of Vancouver and another of the Wizard and ARD amps in the hallway of the studio (sorry I don’t have the links handy). All 4 holers, but something different at the bottom of the rack – either a multi-channel Marshall-based or something else. Likely the same gear as used for Black Ice.

Oh yeah, Brendan O’Brien producing again…

Brian mentioned him in a recent interview here @ 12:25
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWt8JCyfv0k

No surprise, unfortunately. So don’t expect big changes folks!

I still hope this time the guitars will be much rawer and louder. Less polish and more aggression.

    • avatar
      KyleSG
      Posted at 22:21h, 30 April

Yeah I agree they needed a new producer….but maybe because they had one more record left on there contract with Sony they didn’t have much choice or say? not that O’Brien is bad he’s great but we need someone that would push AC/DC to get them back into there beginning roots. Another big factor in AC/DC’s now a days sound is equipment. Don’t get me wrong wizard amps are awesome amps but they sound to now and not yesterday if you get what I am saying. late 70’s JMP’s is where it’s at in IMO. Also yes Angus records with his old guitars which had always been key but I doubt any of them have a T-top or PAF in them anymore and have the new creations for him which again sound to now and not yesterday.

      • avatar

        Posted at 22:41h, 30 April

Well, as I mentioned before, it all comes with an age.

They are comfortable with Warehouse Studio, Mike Fraser and Brendan O’Brien. Don’t need/want to “risk” any dramas that might come with new studio, new engineer or producer (I suppose, the last time it was with Rick Rubin during Ballbreaker sessions in 1994/95).

Same goes for the equipment – Wizards, SG’s with the custom pickups… If they like that sound, we won’t do anything about it. Also the attitude and aggressiveness that they had in them in their 20’s is long gone, so… It is only natural they mellowed.

But they still got that groove, which makes your body dance to the rhythm so naturally and that is the most important thing.

      • avatar
        Spellbound
        Posted at 06:45h, 01 May

Ang says he doesn’t replace his pick ups. They’re all stock. Only time he replaced pick ups was when his Jaydee SG (under the Gibson logo) went out and Seymour Duncan replaced them.

They were rewound obviously over the years, but I doubt he replaced them. All they need to do is play, record, and mix all analog and everything will be fine, even with Wizard amps! No digitalizing analog recordings, no extra polish. Just straight up balls out rock.

        • avatar
          KyleSG
          Posted at 08:18h, 01 May

No Angus does replace his pickups and there’s even a page that was on here a couple years ago about the seymore ducan tech talking about the pickups and how sweat and rain makes a mess of the guitars and they have to be fixed from time to time and how seymore makes a pickup for him.

Well I would rather them not make a new album if Malcolm won’t be the one playing on it and same with touring. Supposedly he had a stroke and then again it’s only rumors but supposedly it is he can’t play like he normally does right now so maybe that’s why is taking time off to hopefully regain is skills 100% again! Malcolm Young is the most bad ass guitar player on the planet we all know he can do it!

i keep thinking what might be going though his mind…. he is a very smart chap and im sure it will be the right decision when it comes to it

Even if Steve covers for him its still from the young blood so it is the best alternative

I don’t think Malcolm would want the band to end even if it was him stepping down he would want ACDC to continue for the overall Fans sake

either way i fully respect what choices he makes πŸ™‚

    • avatar

      Posted at 21:06h, 18 April

It’s clear that fans will now divide into two camps:

      – those who think they should call it quits

      – those who want them to continue recording and performing, even if will have to be without Malcolm

Now, it can’t be the same without Malcolm – hell, it has not been the same since Bon Scott died, but does it mean it has been worse? Phil Rudd was replaced, Mark Evans was replaced etc. Everyone of them is unique, but the band kept rockin’ and rollin’.

I am with Ant here. If the band decides that they are going to continue and Malcolm gives his blessing, I am not against that idea as a fan.
Of course, I wish him to make a full recovery and get back on stage, but only they know how serious the illness is. I don’t want to speculate here, but if Brian Johnson said it is a “debilitating illness”, it certainly is not a fever.

The only logical choice from my point of view is their nephew Stevie Young, who actually stood in for Malcolm in 1988 and played on the whole US Tour. Most of the fans (realise, that majority of fans are causal fans, not diehards like us here) couldn’t tell the difference.

Besides, if some of you are familiar with Stevie’s band from the 80’s called Starfighters (or even his early 90’s band Little Big Horn) you might agree with me, that he is more than capable rhythm guitarist and songwriter – and the Young’s resemblance can’t be denied. It is in their blood.

Stevie Young has been playing lately in a blues band called Blue Murda (http://www.reverbnation.com/bluemurda) along with his bandmate from Starfighters – Pat Hambly and from their YouTube videos, you can clearly see he is still having fun:
http://youtu.be/TLKH3c5YsbY (Starfighters axemen in action: Pat Hambly on the left, Stevie Young on the right)

So Brian Johnson says they are definitely getting together in Vancouver next month. The AC/DC website says Malcolm is taking time off, yet the band will continue to make music. I wonder if this means that the band will indeed make another album, but Malcolm may be unable to tour. It wouldn’t be the first time that Malcolm was unable to tour with the band. He had to take some time off several years ago to deal with a major issue.
