First time I tried to capture a decent guitar tone from my 2204 + 1960tv cab. Recorded in stereo with different amp settings, and all with a gretsch my sig.
Signal path: amp – cab – sm58 mic – mixing panel – guitar rig – laptop
Amp settings are pretty straight forward. I’ve modded the amp to sound a bit less bright. Presence 4-5, Bass 1 , middle 5, treble 5-6.
Master was on 3 and pre-amp around 7.
Ah yes, I’m very used to the brightness of my 2204, probably I’m missing it here. But Pre-amp on 7 should be enough for the HWTH tone, I’m also on 6-7 for this.
But beside this, the tone is really great. Warm and smooth, but yet aggressive. Like it a lot! Could you provide a longer sound example? 🙂
Recorded again night prowler, but it needs still more treble I think. Also recorded a single part of gone shootin’, it’s too dark. But it sounds good 😉
Well, the night prowler record is very, very good. Still listening to it, love it! And I think the treble is just right here. Yes, gone shooting is too dark and a bit too gainy. But good playing there, very good timing, makes me jealous 🙂
All in all, that tone makes me thinking about buying a 1960tv cab. Have a 1960A with G12T75 now. Did you buy yours as a new one? Did it need a break-in?
Its really the first time my amp sounds that good. after I’ve modded it. But I’ve also experimented with finding the sweet spot of the pole pieces. That helped alot getting the right crunch.
It’s a 1960tv cab from the early 90’s, so the speakers are englisch made celestions and allready broken-in 😉 But it doesn’t sound that different with a 1960 ax cab with new speakers.
Thats interesting, what did you change in the amp? But yes, I can say that it really sounds good.
Well, I’m looking around for other speakers (used G12M25), but had no luck so far. But when I hear this, it seems to me that I’ll also be happy with a brand new 1960tv or 1960ax. I’m yet a bit unsure about the “speaker break in” thing, some people say its important because new speakers sound harsh, and some other people say it doesnt matter.
I’ve installed the lar-mar ppimv, but all the clips are recorded with the ppimv fully open ( master at 2-3 ). Also changed the input resistor to 68kohm ( classic marshall value ) and removed the 2 treble peaking circuits.
The 3 50+50µF filtercaps are also replaced. The amp is biassed fairly hot.
The sound would be not much different if I recorded them with the new greenbacks. They sound both great, but the old ones do better, if you listen closely. The best deal is to chech the net frequently, there are often very cheap 1960’s with greenbacks from the 90’s. I’ve paid 350 euros for the 1960tv, what is really cheap.

Ok, I see, so its practically a “power amp master volume plus lower brightness mod”?
I found out that my attenuator damps the highs a bit, which is probably a good side effect here.
Yes, thats what I’m doing at the moment, looking around everyday for nice cabs/greenbacks. 350 for a used 1960tv is indeed a very good price. Seems like I have to be patient, most used cabs are loaded with G12T75 🙂

Posted at 16:30h, 30 JuneReally a great tone. Maybe it could take a bit more pre-amp? What are your amp settings there?
