Congrats on the gear, Atomic!
The solo is well-played, pretty good!
One thing, it sounds like the guitar is a bit out of tune compared to the original when I hear the intro riff – do you? at least to my ears, I still have a hard time getting the right tuning for many of their songs π
Cheers
Yeah I believe you’re right. It is ever so slightly out of tune. I just kind of quickly tuned it and went at it in one take and skipped a bit on the quality control. lol It’s funny when you’re playing you don’t always notice but when you hear it recorded after you hear things like that a lot more as well as mistakes or bad out of tune bends. Another weird thing is that it sounds out of tune at the start but seems to sound more in tune as the song goes on!
Yeah I know what you mean, often I only hear differences in tuning like that after recording and listening.
Myself, many times I think my playing sounding good when I’m in the middle of it, or immediately after – then I hear it again at a later point, the next day or two, and it doesn’t sound nearly as good π
Funny thing is, there is a point of drunkenness where I believe my playing actually improves because I am more relaxed and uninhibited. And then again, there is the point later where my guitar is totally out of tune but I think I’m a rock star. lol π
Amazing! Wich speakers are you using?
And about your SG , what year is it?
Very , very , very awesome TONE!!
Your solo is near to perfection , keep doing it!!!
See ya!
My cab has Greenbacks in it. Two of them are made in England and two are Chinese. I’m pretty sure I have one of the British ones mic’d here. My SG is a 2010. The bridge pickup (the only one I use here) is a Gibson ’57 Classic which is basically a reissue of the old PAFs. I plan on throwing in a ’57 Classic Plus soon and putting the current one in the neck position replacing the Seymour Duncan that’s there now. The Plus has a few more turns of wire to it and should provide a little more “oumphs” if you know what I mean. I’m really pounding, bending and shaking the shit out of the strings in the solo to get everything out of every note and I think a bit more aggressive pickup will help in that area.
Thanks for the kind words Nate!
Haha… it has it’s own “blanky”! I just put my amps to bed like children! lol
I had a few important things to pay for too but said to Hell with it I can pay for them later…. I can be a bit irresponsible at times. haha
Right now there are Groove tubes in the power section but I plan on ordering a matched set of Svetlana EL34s or Winged “C”s unless I come across something else I like better. I’m thinking part of the harshness that I’m hearing is more due to the power tubes than the preamp ones. It’s weird because sometimes to my ears it’s all there and other times not at all. Maybe my ears are just fucked from the volume! lol I’ve been trying different combinations of 12ax7’s in V1 and V2 but I can’t remember what was in there for this recording! Basically been trying a bunch Sovteks, Groove tubes, a couple JAN “Phillips” 5751’s (a bit less gain to these), a couple of old mystery tubes and a couple old tubes I found in an organ I recently acquired. YES I bought a tube driven organ π for like 35$ and it has about 40 vintage tubes in it! lol Most are 12AU7’s which are also low gain tubes but there were two 12ax7’s in the organ’s amp itself that have date codes from 1963!!! They are branded with the organ name which is Conn but a little research indicated that they are in fact made by Sylvania. I’m trying to find some out of all these that sound good and are low noise because some of them crackle and hiss and hum and make all kinds of noises I don’t like. lol I think once I get the new power amp tubes and have it biased again I’ll throw in the 12AX7’s from the organ. Those old tubes were military grade and military tested like the JANs are. I guess I can’t complain too much about the current tone though. Was playing along to a bunch of old AC/DC today and it surprised me how close it got. It seemed to nail a lot of other classic rock sounds I like too.
Thanks! I’m still testing different preamp tubes. Sometimes the amp sounds a little harsh when I crank it. This thing has WAY more treble than my other amp, like, I have to turn it way down. The master is only on about 3 in this. I might get some new power amp tubes for her too.
Hey Atomic,
i have changed my Groovetubes as well, because as you said, they sound too harsh. I installed JJs powertubes, they are very soft smooth and i`m very happy with them, but, like you, i have different preamptubes.
ok, better you hear them for yourself and make a test. Different people listen different……
They both are telling that their tubes are rich in harmonics and warm and full sounding and so on, that`s why i choosed the JJs. They also, like these german tubes, sound slightly darker what in a already brighter sounding amp, like the 2203, is absolutely fine ! Make a desicion for yourself π

I’m not 100% sure but I believe that the letters refer to the size of the magnets. You’ll see that there are a few labelled G12M.
