12 Aug Get That Tone! (AC/DC & Sandercoe’s Video Contest Tone Video)
Now, here’s a video I shot (trying to be professional) recently.
This was an officially sponsored video by AC/DC (yes, I got that close to them in this instance), made to support Justin Sandercoe’s AC/DC official guitar contest made by AC/DC to launch the IronMan 2 soundtrack.
My intent here was to try and re-create some decent AC/DC guitar tone, somehow relating to the studio Album “Back in Black”.
The original clip lasted a lot more, but was cut to circa 5 minutes by the production for practical reasons.
These are some pictures of that recording session that I took:
WARNING: the image below is HUGE (if you click on it, that is)

Posted at 22:14h, 05 DecemberHi, seems like it’s a Marshall Valvestate.

Posted at 07:53h, 25 NovemberWhat’s the best way to get ac/dc tone at a bedroom level with a small amp or any other amp? In the video you maxed out the volume with the solidstate Marshall. Even on that small amp, max volume would disturb the neighbors and especially the wife π Maybe a 5 – 30 watt tube amp with a power attenuator or another solid state amp or some hybrid amp?

Posted at 07:59h, 25 NovemberI have the same problem, but solved it with a master volume amp. 50 watt jmp from ebay, 4×12″ cabinet, master volume at bedroom level. Sound kicks ass and is quiet enough. However, this is a rather expensive solution. Look at the ebay watch post, Angusrocks posted just 2 of them in the comments.

Posted at 10:14h, 25 NovemberThis is a BIG subject here at solodallas.net.
Funny, I am now editing a one hour video (sigh: probably be split in two or more parts to make it more enjoyable) about… attenuators. There are several options for us bedroom rockers (I am one) and these are:
β’ modelers (software or hardware): headphones, great quality
β’ master volume amps
β’ non master volume tube amps attenuated

Posted at 09:47h, 06 NovemberNo you can’t. Thanks anyway.
I’m a little disappointed. Why are they no longer available?
Sigh.
SoloDallas
Posted at 09:51h, 06 NovemberYou can. But the good news for you – ndk1 – is, that I have MANY of those older tutorials/videos and I am starting to upload them here on SoloDallas.net today.
I was waiting for my first new tutorial to be up here to launch the “old” series, and I am now ready. Be prepared to re-watch most of those in the following days. I will be making a public announcement here and on youtube shortly with a promo clip. Thanks,
SD π

Posted at 21:16h, 06 NovemberI don’t know why (actually I do) but I felt a sense of loss when I was unable to find your old tuts. They are so well made and filmed and you’re a natural for teaching. Of course, you can play the guitar and how!
Thanks Phil, you’re the best.

Posted at 06:21h, 24 SeptemberI couldn’t believe when I won “Most in need of Encouragement” for this contest. I didn’t have any thoughts on winning anything whatsoever but I really wanted to do it and I LOVED doing it. Great fun.

Posted at 21:32h, 10 SeptemberFil, you said the original video was much longer, but was cut for production purposes– is there anyway we could all see the full video? or is that property of Mr. Sandercoe?

Posted at 16:14h, 12 Augustcombo sounds flashing, for this size and money, it gives you a realy nice tone. is it loud or can you use it at home, besides gr4 and more… ?
SoloDallas
Posted at 17:04h, 12 AugustYou can use it at home, too, but remember, every time you turn an amp soft, it WILL lose its best nuances. The reason is also that the speakers will never work good enough at low volumes. So you risk getting that fake tubish sound. Still, it’s here with me and I play on it sometimes. I really prefer to use modeling software/technology nowadays. I can play with the headphones on, blasting as loud as I want, great tool for practice.

Posted at 17:09h, 12 Augustyes, ive also got gr4 for home use. my girlfriend would kill me if id disturb her g**damn private practise what ever tv show π but sometimes i feel the need to get loud, and the band gear is to far away to go there for a few minutes of freakin out:D
AVT20 isnt to expensive, not a joke price, but still affordable and not the biggest waste,
Thanks !

Posted at 18:54h, 10 AugustOh cool! I really look forward to that. Is it a Non-MV amp, or did you get George to put a PPIMV on it. I’ll see if i can get a vid up of the Marshall Class 5 in the next few weeks with my best attempt at the Kossoff tone (though i don’t have a mic). See yah later

Posted at 08:37h, 10 AugustHey Fil, really liking the site, can’t wait for you to uploads more vids. Is there any chance you could do a vid on your new JMP with maybe some Kossoff licks? I understand you’re busy with work, family etc. but if you get time could you do that? Thanks
SoloDallas
Posted at 08:52h, 10 AugustThank you. Now I’m liking my site as well, I like how it’s shaping up. You have no idea of how much content I am going to add in the future. Strange coincidence that you mentioned my upcoming JTM50 (from Metro). I just wrote George (Metropulous) this morning telling him I will be reviewing his amp. I was in fact thinking of doing two things: one AC/DC thing and one Kossoff thing. Plus, I’ll interview George in written form, all of this here on solodallas.net! π

Posted at 03:37h, 07 AugustGreat video as always. Sorry that you got kicked off youtube, they’re arse holes. Its so fucked up that they did that. Never mind coz’ your sites gonna be 1 000 000 times better than shitty youtube.
I had a question, I’m thinking of buying a Marshall Plexi, I was wondering what kind to get, where I can get them, what price I should pay, etc.? Thanks.
Also, I’m not sure if any one else is experiencing this problem but my browser (google chrome) doesn’t seem to play the videos.
Thanks again!
SoloDallas
Posted at 15:29h, 08 AugustHey mate. The videos were not playing because they were linked to youtube. I lost them all, though I have some backups. This one is now back and working. Not onto your question: yes, I know what to suggest that you get. I strongly suggest a plexi clone. They sound like the older, vintage ones. Especially, I recommend the one I just got, a “Metro” (Metropulous) JMP50 with EL34s. Google “Metropulos amps” and get in touch with George. Tell him “SoloDallas – Fil – sent me to you”.

Posted at 13:00h, 29 JulyCody, I have an AVT00 combo at home and although it’s never gonna be as good as a full valve amp it’s a pretty good sound. Only the main power stage is valve, but I can get a reasonable AC/DC tone when turned up quite loud. Consider though that I don’t have neighbors and am able to do this, I think it’s about the best for the money if you don’t wan’t effects e.t.c. just ‘good old Rock ‘n’ roll.

Posted at 13:05h, 29 JulyRob, please feel free to post video responses to videos here to show, talk or anything of your likings.
In time – when I learn how to π – some users will be able to post their own blog topics if they so want. Cheers buddy, Fil π

Posted at 13:08h, 29 JulyPS This is a place “for us”. There won’t be trolls or any of that sort. Won’t be tolerated. So, all the discussions, postings and comments will be among us. A rather closed community I guess (maybe a few hundreds?). Forum will come along too, once I see that there are in fact at least a few hundred users (otherwise, if I did it now, it’d seem already like a dead place and everyone would run away scared π )

Take into consideration the new Marshall combo called “the Haze”. Great amp!

Posted at 07:16h, 29 JulyAlso, have you ever tried the AVT line of marshalls?
SoloDallas
Posted at 07:20h, 29 JulyNever have, but I am sure they are pretty good. You now I am mostly a JMP/JTM fan when it comes to real amps, but anything really will do: it’s the PLAYING that counts the most!

Posted at 07:08h, 29 JulyThanks mate and WELCOME to my site!
It is the cheapest of the line, a solidstate Marshall. USD300 circa. Not important what model name exactly (can’t remember, but I can look on it if you really want me to)
How do you like the site?
