12 Aug FOR SALE: 1972 Marshall Superbass + Cab (superb condition except head not working)
Hey folks,
I’m making this post for one of our new members, Lois, who is trying to sell a 1972 Marshall SuperBass with its cab which belonged to her husband. Serial is: SL/A 5997D
She is pretty new in this vintage gear world, so we will try our best to help her out.
The amp itself is in an amazing condition ( I’ll attach the pictures in a bit ) except that the head is not working. We don’t know what it is. It’s been like this a few years now. Lois told me that her husband intended to try something new, so he was waiting to fix the amp.
From the condition in which the amp is I personally don’t think it is a big deal.
Okay so I keep talking so much about how beautiful this amp is, I’ll throw you guys some pictures now π .
Seriously guys, isn’t this beautiful ?
As you see it is in a SUPERB condition and has been looked after.
Here are a few pictures from the inside of the amp:
So Lois is trying to sell this amp. We talked about fixing it, but since she lives in New Mexico, it might be hard to find someone trustworthy. Fixing the amp is in stand by right now. I personally don’t think it is a big deal. I mean look at its condition; it is pretty rare to find such a piece in this condition. Probably tubes, a few little components, fuse etc, but can’t be a 100% sure until it has been checked.
Shipping is another thing. We know these amps+cabs are super heavy and not easy to carry around. Local pickup is best even though it might be hard to sell it since she lives in New Mexico.
The price… What price could she ask for something like this ?
First of all, we know that if this amp was in a working condition it could easily go for 2000$+ ( head and cab of course ), but since we don’t know what’s wrong with it, we can’t really fix a price.
I talked to Lois, AndrΓ© and Franz about it, and we think best would be to let someone make a serious offer.
The cab is working perfectly. The amp is first hand and has never been modded.
Now that I mention mods: Guitarists ! Attention ! A Superbass can be turned into a Superlead pretty easily ! π You can find tutorials for this on almost every forum ( Metroamp, Marshall… ) and you can bring it back to Superbass specs at any time !
So if any of you folks are around New Mexico and would like to help Lois out or get in touch with her just post on this thread. If you know a trustworthy person who could fix it we would be very grateful.
If you are interested in buying the amp and cab please get in touch here. Lois will be checking the website and replying as good as she can.
Thanks for reading π
Chris
Edit:
New pictures of the inside of the cab. Needless to say that it is amazing !

Posted at 04:25h, 27 JanuaryThe amp tech emailed me today and found out why the amp wasn’t working. Bias caps were bad and a ground terminal screw broke so one power tube and the speaker jack had no ground. 2 caps 1 screw and a new set of tubes and all is well. I can’t wait to get it and make some noise.

Posted at 16:21h, 11 FebruaryHi Bat . . . Just wondering if the work on the amp was completed, and you’ve gotten it back – and are making some ‘noise’, as you said!? Just want to know there’s some funk going on ^_^

Posted at 03:25h, 21 JanuaryHey guys, just wanted to let everyone know that I bought the amp from Lois.
It is indeed a super bass in a super lead chassis from the factory. The only parts changed were the bias caps and the 68k input resistors. Everything else is 100% original. It’s at the tech right now to see what is wrong with it. (I suspect a filter cap is bad)
Now on to the cabinet….
I plugged my original ’73 SL in, hit a few chords and was blown away by how BIG it sounded. The only changes were to increase the treble from 4 to about 6 on the amp. It’s hard to describe but the SL has never sounded better. I have a 1960AX, 1960TV and a Mojotone 4-12 with british vintage BV-25M speakers and they all sound brighter and thinner. After about and hour of cleaning this thing up I’m a happy camper.

Posted at 06:47h, 21 Januaryheeeeeeey, you must be Jamie right ? π
Lois told me about you and that you guys find an agreement.
Sounds like the head is no big of a worry.
Glad about the cab !
Will you be teasing us with some demos ? π
But I’m glad you guys came to an agreement !
Bat Fastard
Posted at 07:10h, 21 JanuaryYes, I’m Jamie.
“Teasing you with some demos” may happen if I find the right mic to do it justice. (I’m looking….) If anyone in the Richmond VA area has the place and player to put it thru it’s paces, let me know….
Just gotta say that dealing with Lois was long and well worth it (she was great to deal with).
Thank you Lois. You have no idea how happy I am to have found a set up like this and how it sounds! Your husband will be proud to hear the “old girl sing for many more years to come”.

Posted at 07:47h, 21 JanuaryVery kind words of yours, Jamie !
We will all be waiting for some demos now π
( and I know that feeling without a mic… I’m recording with a cheap 50 camera… lol )

Posted at 16:50h, 24 Januaryhmmm – my first reply disappeared! Anyway – thank you, Jamie (Bat Fastard), for giving her a great home, and for even having a special shipping box built for the cabinet, to ensure a safe trip! I hope you get much pleasure from her – that was the first gift I ever bought for David!
And thank you, Chris, for helping guide me through this process during a very tough time. I appreciate it very much.

Posted at 19:32h, 18 NovemberHi guys — I am SO sorry I haven’t been here for the last 2 months. Besides just being very blue about the loss of my man, I have also been dealing with the incredible paperwork and stuff that a death apparently generates. sigh…
Anyway, the gentleman who has been planning to buy the amp has had some “real life” emergencies that required him to use his funds for more boring but important things. So I am going to be considering selling it to someone else. Sad, because I think he truly wanted it!
If I need to open the cab back up, I will, but zooming in on the photos I took, it appears the speakers read as follows:
“Made in England
Celestion (w/graphic of a speaker)
G 12 M (?)
26W
16 ohms
55 hz
ROLA Celestion LTD
Ipswich
Suffolk”
Thanks . . . lois

Posted at 23:21h, 20 AugustHi – a couple of questions. What happens when it’s plugged in and turned on? Does the light come on? Is there any hum from the speakers?
Also, trying to read the stickers on those speakers… are they G12M 55hz models?
Dries
Posted at 07:12h, 21 AugustI also see 55hz speakers, bass cones. Don’t really like them for guitar but some people do though.
Chris Moiny
Posted at 08:58h, 21 AugustYep, Dries is right with the speakers.
I’ll forward the other question to Lois, thanks lautmaschine π

Posted at 07:16h, 20 AugustIf I can clear out something, this is not an original superbass. The serial is SL what stands for super lead and the sticker on the back is a bass printing on top of lead. Probably the amp was modded to bass specs.
sct13
Posted at 07:27h, 20 AugustRight, I noticed that straight away, It was a Superlead at one time before it left the factory. Or is was modded by an authorized dealer, wont know till I get a look at the circuit.
Chris Moiny
Posted at 08:22h, 20 AugustOr not…
Marshall wasn’t that accurate back in the 60’s and 70’s. It’s common to find a Superbass with a Superlead serial.
It was probably meant to be a Superlead, but finally turned out to end as a Superbass.
I actually doubt it has been modded since this is a first hand. But to be we sure we’d need to open it and see it from its guts π
