23 Nov Current State Of The Schaffer Replica Development – Gold Tag Version – Part III
Dear members,
While we are still preparing the production of the Gold Tag version, we already ordered the first parts. And today we got the first delievery. The tuner knobs. Very hard to find, took us almost a week of searching the net, Because, you know, we want the original ones. And we got them. Thousand of them (yes, literally) came in today. Will be used for the pedal version too.
We will keep you updated.
Your SoloDallas Team

Posted at 03:44h, 17 JanuaryHey Franz, I just thought of a question about TSR’s design.
Is it going to have the same curved back like the upright Vega systems? Or will it be like the Plexi-Schaffer in a rectangular box kinda thing?
banane
Posted at 09:04h, 18 JanuaryIt will be like the Plexi version. No curved back. Unfortunately. We practically fought for keeping the curved back in our Replica cases, but it turned out that the cases would be way too expensive then. So we went for a straight backside at the end.

Posted at 08:19h, 19 JanuaryOh, okay. No worries though, I bet it’ll look great, can’t wait to see it! 😀

Posted at 19:24h, 08 JanuaryAny idea when there will be another update regarding the Gold Tag version? The suspense is torture! 😉
banane
Posted at 20:06h, 08 JanuarySorry, Jim 🙂 I know and I have ants up my ass too, but…
Well, here in Austria many shops (actually ALL shops we work with, even our tech) close their business over the holidays till the 6th January and then slowly starts up again.
And not with daily work but typically with taxes, financial stuff, stocktaking and all that. Our case builder even starts business only next week. One reason for that could be that skiing is very important here 🙂
Anyways, at the moment we can do just nothing but wait until everybody is back in business. Sorry.

How can I get in contact with Fil? It is in regards to Steve Buslowe’s SVDS he bought on ebay a few months ago for $2,400 (i was bidding against him on it). I’d like to see if he can help me with my new SVDS i just acquired (it was owned by Steve Vai). It’s missing the X10 transmitter and owner’s manual. This site is the only site that has all the knowledge of the SVDS as well as a large fanbase. I know the guy who worked on David Gilmour’s SVDS during the ’94 P.U.L.S.E. Tour and he’s got everything he needs to repair/modify/upgrade my SVDS (including crystal resonator replacement with different frequencies to match receiver/transmitter). He’s based in Burbank, California. I would really appreciate the help, I’m using the SVDS the same way Gilmour used it for the ’80-’81 The Wall tours (he actually had two units working at the same time!). Keep up the great work and thanks for the info!

Posted at 11:02h, 05 JanuaryAh it was you who was bidding against me ! Just kiddin’ 😉
Wel if you haven’t got an transmitter it will be hard to find one. there are a whole lot other things that need to be done when replacing the crystal, to get the unit stable and get the max. signal to noise ratio out of it. There are a lot of different transmitters out there!
If Fil can’t help you, I maybe can. but I can’t promise.
Spellbound
Posted at 20:45h, 05 JanuarySo you 2 were the guys I was bidding against… 😛
artbarsnstripes
Posted at 00:02h, 08 Januaryyou too! it was a great unit too!
artbarsnstripes
Posted at 00:00h, 08 Januaryahh it was you! haha it got too high in cost for me :/ Yeah, i’ve done some research and talked to a few experts, but considering the cost of the unit that was bought than the one I just obtained and to get an operating transmitter would be substantially cheaper, almost half in cost! Dries, if there’s anything you can do to help, i’ll be more than happy to reward you in any way! I’ve been hunting for the SVDS for some time so i’m fully committed 🙂

Posted at 04:29h, 06 JanuaryHi David. Are you referring to Greg at Production Wireless?
artbarsnstripes
Posted at 00:01h, 08 JanuaryYes, really nice guy too! we talked shop for an hour or so and he said that he get my unit up an running just right!
Spellbound
Posted at 05:39h, 08 JanuaryYeah, Greg is a fantastic guy. Spent almost 2 hours on the phone with him talking about Vega systems, both Cetec and Schaffer, and he was detailing how they work. He’s also trying to get into contact with John Nady to see if he I can get help with my Nasty Cordless Pro 400 (the system Van Halen used back in the day!). Hell he spent a lot of time explaining the problems I was having with the Nasty and how I could approach doing it myself.
Very smart, very funny person. I just wish I could absorb all the information he tells in one run! 😀
MisterScary
Posted at 19:23h, 08 JanuaryI’m glad to see that people are going to Greg for their Vega needs. 🙂 I found him a couple of years ago after buying a pair of Cetec Vega R42s. At the time, the Rx didn’t match the Tx frequencies. He was able to get everything paired as well as replace some parts (lights, antennas, etc.). Since then, he’s worked on at least a dozen different Vega Rx and Tx for me! He’s incredibly knowledgeable, and like you’ve all said, a pleasure to talk with. 🙂
Spellbound
Posted at 03:45h, 17 JanuaryI’m glad you directed me to him. I plan on sending my R42 in very soon also! 😀
ar2619Rob
Posted at 16:06h, 01 MarchI agree. I bought my R42 from Jim (MisterScary) a year ago and it works really well.
Spellbound
Posted at 23:46h, 02 MarchHaven’t got mine up and running yet. I almost bought a transmitter for it on eBay, but both listings ended and neither seller will reply to me…
Though, on the brighter side, I just got my Vega Pro 58 that Jim sold me working! It’s fantastic! 😀 Just need to ditch these horrible Dimarzio pick ups in my Gretsch…

Posted at 21:03h, 09 DecemberGuys, sorry for asking, but I want that damn thing so badly haha, any small news on the development 🙂 ?
Spellbound
Posted at 05:00h, 10 DecemberOr pictures of the final product? 😀
banane
Posted at 08:17h, 10 DecemberI’ll see if I can arrange some photos of what we have at the moment. Basically, we don’t want to show things that are only halfways done or would lead to misunderstandings.
For example, we have a case prototype, for our tech to match the PCB fittings which is made of blank metal.
Final form is already there, final color isn’t.
Spellbound
Posted at 12:00h, 10 DecemberAh, I see. 🙂
I wonder if the blank metal version will look as cool as the Plexiglass did… 😀
banane
Posted at 12:44h, 10 DecemberRather not 🙂 It’s just a sample with even rusty spots, made only for taking measures.
depuis1899
Posted at 18:44h, 10 DecemberSounds nice hehehe

Posted at 01:46h, 11 DecemberWith those rusty spots on it, you could nickname it “The Schaffer Relic”. 😛

Posted at 08:13h, 10 DecemberAt the moment, our Tech Markus is partially redoing the main PCB layout of the Gold Tag version because the holes for attaching it on the case bottom don’t fit as planned. He has to move the holes on the PCB which means parts must be rearranged.
But on the positive side, the schematics for the pedal version is done. Next step here is to make the layouts.
Spellbound
Posted at 04:11h, 13 DecemberMan… It must sting having to go back and readjust things when you guys are so close to release.
Hopefully he manages to find an easy solution!

Posted at 16:57h, 28 Novemberjust checked your youtube account and saw the new svds videos, the new sound is awsome. Was Malcolm also using the svds back then?
Ant
Posted at 14:07h, 29 Novemberthe 2203 blew my mind 🙂
JaiminhoPagina
Posted at 23:53h, 01 DecemberAs far as I know, Malcolm didn’t use the SVDS. At least based on old photos, I can say he used a regular cable most of the time. For two reasons, I believe: he didn’t move on stage and also because the SVDS was way too expensive. I guess they could barely afford only one, let alone two of them.
currentpeak
Posted at 00:53h, 02 DecemberI remember reading one interview where Malcolm mentioned, that when they started using wireless, the fans accused them of playing on playback. So they came to those fans and challenged them to try for themselves (showed them guitars so they could play the strings).
It could well be a good story for media (most of the artists make up things in interviews), or maybe there was a period when not only Angus, but also Malcolm and Cliff were using/testing wireless.
However I don’t think he has ever used it in the studio.
JaiminhoPagina
Posted at 03:10h, 02 DecemberYes. Sometime by the early 80s, if I’m not mistaken, everyone on the band was using wireless units. But at least during the 70s Malcolm didn’t use any, I think.
Spellbound
Posted at 04:55h, 05 DecemberLike Jaiminho said, the band was all using wireless gear in the early 80s (about ’83ish). In my opinion Mal looked like he was using a HME wireless system at the time (from what I could make out of the pictures)
He did periodically go back and forth between cable and wireless. If you look at some pictures of him gigging in ’88 with his Jaydee Gretsch, you can see the cable run to the back of the stage. A roadie in 2008 confirmed Mal usually went back to cables because they all colored his tone, until he started using Lectrosonics of course..
Now, in regards to Mal using a SVDS… I asked Fil about a picture I took of the Donington DVD, because if you get a good look at the TX on Mal’s strap, it looks a little too “rounded” to be an HME/Tele transmitter… It looks very much like a T-77! Fil says it could’ve been another system, but to me, Mal’s tone seems like it has a special “something” to it (if you listen to the VHS version of the gig, NOT THE DVD!!).
Ant
Posted at 20:31h, 05 DecemberMy jaw would drop off if mal used the svds at donnington 😛
Spellbound
Posted at 20:38h, 05 DecemberHere’s a picture of the transmitter on Mal.

I’ll look for better pics.
Ant
Posted at 20:48h, 05 DecemberLook for the anteni also that would be a givaway 🙂
Spellbound
Posted at 21:58h, 05 DecemberI’ve been trying to look for pictures that are close enough. Can’t find any, but it does seem like he’s using the cabley-antenna things. I know for a fact Ang’s TX has it, but still not sure of Mal’s.
Spellbound
Posted at 12:37h, 28 NovemberMan, it’s really hard to come back and keep looking at these and be able to wait to see what they’ll look like on the final product. 😛

Posted at 23:06h, 26 NovemberI have question me and my rythme player have 2204s but mine is a 78 his is a 79- 80 both are JMPs they look close but are different, looks like marshall used different material and sizes
Angusrocks101
Posted at 22:22h, 25 NovemberShould I get the Gibson SG Standard or the Gibson Angus Young Signature?
Dries
Posted at 23:06h, 25 NovemberNone of those two. I really don’t like the new Sg’s.
If you want an SG in that price class, or if you have a little bit extra money to spend, go for vintage. Some 90’s SG’s play great, and much better than a new one.
Just my 2c 😉
Angusrocks101
Posted at 23:28h, 25 NovemberSo the 90s SGswould be good? What pickups did they use then?
Dries
Posted at 23:38h, 25 NovemberThat varies. Replace them with Ttops or so, would be a great guitar.
Dries
Posted at 23:39h, 25 NovemberBtw some mid and late 70’s SG’s go also for a low price. they are a bit different than the 60’s and early 70’s though. But still great guitars.
Angusrocks101
Posted at 23:45h, 25 NovemberAre u sure the Angus Sig isn’t very good bc I’ve heard really good things about it. Really nothing negative. But I have heard negative about the new SG standards. Im not getting a new standard but possibly the angus sig. I think it would play great I mean have u played one?
Dries
Posted at 23:56h, 25 NovemberAngus sig, the old one or the new one? If you mean the angus SG standard, don’t do, it’s just a regular standard.
Angusrocks101
Posted at 00:00h, 26 NovemberIt’s the one with the lightning bolt inlays and an angus sig pickup
Angusrocks101
Posted at 00:07h, 26 NovemberI found a 1971 walnut SG for 2000 would it be good?
dash8311
Posted at 00:28h, 26 NovemberYou’d have to play it, honestly.
If I could suggest a Gibson Custom Shop SG with VOS, ’61 reissue. They come PLEK’d and are great players. You can get a used one, 2006 and newer, for around $1800-2200. eBay etc. Tremolo or fixed stop.
I put an AY Sig bridge pickup in mine and it’s great. No thunderbolt inlays, but will nicer to play and be a higher quality guitar compared to the Gibson USA AY SG.
Just my thoughts.
Angusrocks101
Posted at 00:42h, 26 NovemberWhat about a 2006 SG VOS with the maestro tailpiece?
dash8311
Posted at 00:48h, 26 NovemberYes that’s what I meant, maestro/trem, same difference 🙂
Angusrocks101
Posted at 00:50h, 26 NovemberOk so should I get either the 61 reissue or the AY signature new.
Angusrocks101
Posted at 00:51h, 26 NovemberOh okay so that’s the one I should get?
dash8311
Posted at 03:33h, 27 NovemberAs I said in my previous post, I don’t think a Gibson USA Angus Signature guitar will be as high a quality as the Gibson Custom Shop SGs.
Just my humble opinion. Play both and decide, that’s the ultimate decider: not if it has thunderbolt inlays 🙂
Spellbound
Posted at 11:58h, 27 NovemberIf you guys don’t mind me chiming in, I’ve heard horror stories about Gibson Custom Shop as of recent. Honestly I’d be very, very weary of buying any Gibson (Custom shop or not) since it’s known that there is very little to none QA.
I would totally snag that ’71 if I could. 😀
