26 Oct Current State Of The Schaffer Replica Development – Gold Tag Version – Part I
Dear members,
this posting is dedicated to the current status of the making of our Replica, which we called officially “The Schaffer Replica”.
So, what’s the current state? As per today, the 26th October 2012, we have:
- Case: Prototyping status
- Electronics: Circuits, Schematics and sound testing done, awaiting case prototype to make the final PCBs (yes, there are two in the final product) fit into the case
We also accomplished to find original SVDS tuner knobs which will be made for us for the most possible original look.
To get further with the case we made a few prototypes in plexiglass to have something in our hands before we order hundred or more metal cases. You know, making sure that everything fits.
So, this is what we have for now, case-wise. We got them from the shop yesterday evening and brought them to our tech Markus for assembling. And because they look so cool (at least we like them), we’ll have a comeback of the Raiders in early November and make a few videos with them.
Have a look at our case prototypes:

Posted at 18:43h, 27 OctoberThe plexi cases look really cool. I think it would be cool to have one to show all the hard work done inside.
You could call them The “Schaffer Ghost Edition” π

Posted at 23:53h, 27 OctoberYes, I think we actually will do that. The plexi versions are sort of an “intermediate version” of the electronics. Only one PCB instead of two, but the second PCB in the production version just carries the front stuff, LEDs, tuners. In a few days I will pick them up from our tech Markus, ready for use.
Then I’ll post a few more photos of them, equipped with the guts.

Posted at 09:55h, 27 OctoberThose are cool in plexiglass !

Posted at 23:54h, 27 OctoberYes, true. But just wait until you see them equipped with shiny green PCBs, the VU meter and all the LEDs π

Posted at 04:27h, 27 OctoberI can’t take all of this waiting and teasing! π
banane
Posted at 08:22h, 27 OctoberHehe π But to be honest, it’s not even meant as teasing. Just want to show progress and also explain why this all is taking so long.

Posted at 14:53h, 27 OctoberHaha, was all good fun. π These updates are great, and I’m glad you guys are trying to keep us “in” with how far it is, but at the same time it’s hard to be patient and be able to wait. π Also, drucker is right, the plexiglass cases look really cool! I wouldn’t be against buying a plexi-schaffer (after I get the Gold Tag of course lol).
Side question though: When are the video demos gonna be uploaded? I t

Posted at 18:01h, 27 OctoberDoh, I just saw that they’ll be uploaded in early November. Nevermind! haha

Posted at 00:02h, 28 OctoberYes π The shop owner talked with me while he made the cases and was fascinated of our story. She asked me even to keep her up to date with the development.
Well, if you would pay for the plexi case and the assembling, I wouldn’t say that it’s impossible to get one. We have 5 PCBs of this “intermediate” version, 2 are built for Fil, one is built for me. So, theoretically 2 more can be made. Have to ask out tech though.

Posted at 02:18h, 28 OctoberI don’t blame her, chasing a guitar sound would make any interested. π
Would a plexi-case be the same cost if I (theoretically) ordered one since it isn’t in the metal casing? Or would it be the same price?
Also, when would it need to be paid for? I have money for the Gold Tag, but that’s it. Awaiting a job I should get this week, but money is going to go towards a 2500 dollar Superbass set up, and a Cetec Vega that will be sold to me.
So basically, if I can put off the payment for the plexi-replica I can do it. Assuming your techs are willing, of course. π

Posted at 02:44h, 28 OctoberAfter reading your post reply to ANgusSG, would the plexi technically be the “Schaffer B&T” replica? π
banane
Posted at 09:41h, 28 OctoberMaybe, not sure what “B&T” means? π
banane
Posted at 09:40h, 28 OctoberWell, unfortunately not. Even worse, the plexi cases cost more than the metal cases. We paid β¬500 for all three of them. Must ask our tech how much he’ll charge for another assembly, but a plexi version would cost definitely more than the Gold Tag one. I’ll ask Markus(tech) how much he’ll charge for the rest.
Just curious, which Cetec Vega are you going to buy and do you buy it just to have a wireless or for tone? Getting a Superbass is cool too, how old?
Spellbound
Posted at 12:24h, 28 OctoberIn regards to the B&T question, it was a Schaffer Vega but it’s not a Dual-Diversity system I think. There’s an advertisement on here that Fil posted, It was supposed to be much cheaper than a real SVDS so that other people could use it too without being big rockstars lol.
YIKES! Yeah, I’m not sure if I can actually go for that given what I’m saving up for now…
It’s a Cetec Vega Pro 63 – the first Dynex unit. For both tone and wireless. I’ve developed a real interest in collecting these old vega units – each one can give your guitar a different sound and each one of them doing their own unique thing just intrigues me a lot. π Now of course it isn’t preventing me from getting The Schaffer Replica – hell no, this comes before Vega. π
The Superbass is a late 60’s. Comes with the cabinet, and the price of them together is $2500!!!!! It’s not even a 4×12! It’s like a 6×12!! π

Posted at 15:10h, 28 OctoberI doubt that the single diversity b&t schaffer sounds the same, not due to it’s single diversity, but because they do have a different audio circuit.
Do you have any cetec’s spellbound?

(Was confirmed to me by Mr. Schaffer, too).
The only thing that sounds like a Schaffer-Vega Diversity is our replica, currently. And of course, any properly working original SVDS! π

Posted at 16:52h, 28 OctoberA late ’60s Superbass with a 6×12 cabinet? A man after my own heart!

Posted at 19:42h, 28 OctoberThe wireless portion on my Pro 63’s aren’t very good. A Line 6 wireless into the Vega is the way to go, IMHO…

Posted at 19:59h, 28 OctoberCan be tweaked easily. A propper set up device doesn’t hiss or has interferrence.

Posted at 00:59h, 29 October@Dries: You’re the same guy who messaged me on ebay about selling sdome 58 units yes? (: (also, with that in mind, are you still considering selling them? I’ve been curious about a 58 unit and wasn’t sure if any of them were still around – it’s a yellow one, will send pictures if you aren’t sure or wanna see)
But yeah, I didn’t mean they’d sound exactly the same, but like in a general sense it was the “poor man’s” (is 2000 dollars even cheap in the 80s? :P) SVDS.
I do. I have an R42 (not matching TX yet, gonna buy one eventually), 4 66b units with matching transmitters that are housed in a C-A466. Also own the Cetec Vega 58 that mr. scary sold and said was his last one.
@Fil: Yep! I can’t wait to get my hands on it… 8D I’d actually love to get my hands on your replica, a real SVDS, and a plexi-replica. π
@headwhop: Not a 6×12, a 6×10. I think it’s a 6×10 at least. I’ll get a picture uploaded when I buy it (fil, I posted a pic on facebook asking for your opinion on it if you’d wanna look π )
@dash: Yep, Dries is right. You’d might want to send it in to a repair shop(i’d be willing to direct you to one if you want) if the Vega 63 (any in general really) isn’t functioning properly.

Posted at 15:27h, 29 October$2000 was not cheap in the 80’s.. I bought my first Jaguar XK-E for $4000 in 83.. If I still had that car it would be worth upwards of 85k today, I miss that car… KIRK

Posted at 20:23h, 29 OctoberDamn dude…
I don’t really know anything about cars, but I know seller’s remorse SUCKS. Especially with old cars (and guitars for that matter).
Maybe you’ll get to find an old “junk” one that you can restore? π

Posted at 21:18h, 26 OctoberI’m basically crying hahah. I can only afford the stomp box version (hopefully).

Posted at 14:42h, 26 OctoberSuch an exciting time! I am sure it has been exciting for quite a while for the people doing the work on this but for me, my excitement went through the roof when pre orders opened. And now I check the site several times a day for any kind of update. Great to see!
banane
Posted at 00:22h, 28 OctoberThanks, Aaron. It’s exciting and also relieving for us too, that we finally get something in our hands and to connect to guitar and amp. Next update will be in a few days, when I have them back from our tech Markus. Perhaps on Tuesday.
