Funny thing was it is my JCM 800 got got the closest tonewise for this one and not my JMP! Then again, I’m not sure Angus was using a JMP to record this song anyway… π
Yes that is also true. I just got a better tone through a MV amp for like high voltage tones. Maybe my NMV would do better full power like they would have played then. Have you seen my hells bells cover?
I like Angus’s sound on this tune. It’s nice and clean but with just a slight bite to it. I think the song would have sounded different (not quite as good) if he had a more gainy guitar tone. It’s smooth sounding. I’ll have to watch the video of them doing this again but maybe he’s using a JTM 45 or something? I find my JMP a bit to brittle and bright sometimes for certain things but the character might change a bit once I throw some quality power tubes in it. Still, my amp guy made sure it was wired according to the JMP schematic but it seems to have a lot of gain even at a low preamp setting. It actually seems to have more gain in a way than the 800 which I find kind of odd.
Listening to you as I read this, VERY well done. You know, the FIRST thing I always pay attention to – before tone – is the TIMING. And you did well π Now, regarding the tone, we are rather sure it was a 1959 amp (OR maybe some other brand, like some have mentioned) but Angus did own already his early ’70s Super Lead at this time. But only this amp, not more until they started making more money.
The fact that you may be getting a better tone (and frankly, the one you got here is just perfect) might be due to the fact that your JCM 800 compensated for recording equipment (microphones, their position, the console board and its settings, etc.) and so, funnily enough, the JCM compensates “magically” adding or taking things from the original mix that just sit right in here. One major factor is the speakers. JMP MVs and JCM800s have slightly brighter, harder mids and highs than a 1959. But the 1959 in the studio was heavily equalized often taking out mids from the mix, so this is why you end up having a similar – almost identical tone – to the original sound: they are already mid-scooped.
This is something Marshall started doing in late 70s and throughout the 80s as the rock music was turning more and more into heavier style with the mid frequencies progressively scooped (i.e., the HMF and LMF were “shaped” intentionally both at the amp AND at the speaker level).
Thank you for the encouraging words Fil! They are very much appreciated! π
I find it interesting that when I record something my guitar sounds good (to me) while it is mixed with the original track or song. I fade out the backing track and OUCH!! lol why does my guitar sound so shitty on it’s own?!?! So I’m wondering if I should focus on getting the recorded sound of my guitar by itself to sound pleasing to my ears or just keep trying to get it to mix well with what is playing in the background?
Thanks again Fil. π
That is true. If you had your guitar and malcoms and drums and bass it would be much different than yours alone. Ant do you know a good blues setting for guitar rig 4?
Maybe I’ll follow Fil’s suit and try a Thin Lizzy tune!
Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day after all and another ode to great Irish rock band WOULD be appropriate! π
I’ll see how it goes…
You should. Thin Lizzy went for very different styles during their band life, with the early times different to the later times. But it’s always good to differentiate and try your timing skills on something that you still like, but might be a different band π I am working right now on something new for you guys. Likely post it tonight, hard work!
I was playing around with The Boys Are Back In Town last night. LOTS of little chord changes in that song! I think I’m getting it pretty close, now I just have to memorize the harmonized climbing riffs at the end. I was also playing along with a short live version of Emerald which is also fun there are a couple tricky riffs and changes where the timing is everything.
I dont know if my playing is very good. I dont play the blues that often but it was pretty fun and you may not be able to see my hands on my guitar im not sure. I recorded with my iphone.
It’s on ’74 Jailbreak.
I think it was released in the 80’s but they are all early tunes as the title suggests. You will hear them in some of their live performances from the 70’s.
As you may have guessed the song Jailbreak is on that album too.
You must have heard that one before!

Posted at 02:54h, 17 MarchThat’s true. I think a MV was used for this album though. I’ve got a song from High Voltage uploading on YouTube.

Posted at 03:12h, 17 MarchIn 1975 the master volume amps were still introduced. ACDC was still a bit poor then, so I think they used regular 1959 on this one.

Posted at 04:27h, 17 Marchyes it is a nice tone. And a JTM45 is possible because if he turned it to 7 that sounds about right for a JTM.
Angusrocks101
Posted at 04:29h, 17 MarchI know a good little bit about how 1959’s and JMPs look but was the JTM45 made without the Kitchen type logo?
Angusrocks101
Posted at 04:40h, 17 MarchAnd check out my new video from the High Voltage album.
Atomic'76
Posted at 05:21h, 17 MarchI think they may have had a couple different logos. Like the the jmp they probably changed somewhere along the line.
Angusrocks101
Posted at 06:02h, 17 Marchi was looking at some on youtube and yea they had more of a SLP logo at one time unless that was a reissue which of course would piss me off. lol.
Atomic'76
Posted at 07:48h, 17 Marchlol I don’t think reissues existed back then! There wasn’t much to reissue! π
Angusrocks101
Posted at 08:05h, 17 MarchI mean it didn’t say it was a vintage JTM45 so it could be one of the new reissues
