The Metro Session: 1969 Gibson SG Custom (modded)

16 Sep The Metro Session: 1969 Gibson SG Custom (modded)

This one is the guitar that came in this condition (click here)

“…yes, and I want the guitar to be mint you know… does it have any scratches?”

“Actually, it’s broken in two”

(but it’s CHEAP because of that)

So, I’m buying. This guitar came in fact broken in two. Been fixed in ONE day, now she’s back and a rocker. So much for the “mint/help me to remove this scratch” folks! πŸ˜†

Anyway. This one has a Di Marzio in the bridge position. And also, a micro switch, barely visible, that serves as a single/double coil splitter. Works for both bridge and neck PUs.

The guitar is NOT ’50s wired. I still need to rewire it (the Di Marzio was wired differently). Since the circuit is more complicated, it is taking me more time. You will see me after a minute or so into the video, tuning the guitar and rolling off the bridge pickup volume: pay attention to how the tone becomes muddy. ’50s wiring instead keeps the tone clear even when rolling off the volume.

Oh, I love this guitar!! The white and black pick-ups, looks nice too (Dimarzio’s isn’t it?). And the headstock (special isn’t it?), looks great!! And I love “Riff Raff”, very well played!! I see a Shure mic (or Am I wrong?) Did u record with you Shure mic? Connected it too an Mbox or to our Eleven Rack?

Hi mate, just came back from a week vacation. You were NOT wrong, an SM57 was used here! (usually on the left of the stereo position here)

    Hey Fil πŸ™‚
    I would like to know….
What EQ setting you used here?
I know that with the LPs the bass was cut back and mids and treble were almost full.
Is it the same with the SG’s? Or you used your “Bass on 7-mids on 5-treble on 5” setting?

For the amp or for the mix down (post processing)? For the amp, almost the same for all guitars: for SGs I may have added bass. I was trying to keep the settings like Angus used them, but I could have done better than this. I had to set the mids to 10, while Angus backs them up at 4-ish. Reason is, this amp is hard to oversaturate, and only way is by adding mids. Unless you like specifically this tone, don’t add too much mids. In post production I tried to re-create what I heard in the room at all times.

Thanks for the reply! For the amp I meant πŸ™‚
This means the Marshall is also brighter, since the Metro needs to have the mids on 10 to get the same tone. That sure is interesting! The 1987x “Plexi” RI really seems to be actually a reissue of the post-1973 metal-faces πŸ™‚

Hi, I wanted to ask you something, which can be very simple and complicated, but it remains fundamental.

how you tune the guitar? if you use a tuner, what kind?

    Thanks a lot.

with this amp, it seems that you can record very decent tones. It sounds better than your Marshall 1987xl head. Btw, does the attenuator on the back work properly ? Does it make any change to the tone, or is it just a true attenuation ? What is your opinion on that ? Have you even tried it yet? πŸ˜€ because I guess you don’t really need it in that large warehouse (?) πŸ˜€

Hey man, try putting some graphite (pencil lead) in the nut. My sg was absolutley horrible with tuning but now that Ive put some graphite in the nut, it stays in tune much much better!

    Marcus,
it seems like you found the solution already: the nut. The nut is SUPER important as a piece on guitars: I always have mine checked and built from scratch if needed. I don’t save money on nuts. A “good” nut can completely “revive” your guitar: go to a good, serious and professional luthier and have it either refined or changed for good with good bone!

Sounds great Fil, very bright but still a good amount of bottom end !
Funny thing is that this once more proofes that Angus could have used almost any PAF style PU. Its the wood, the Guitar itself that decides whether its gonna “rock” or not. I wish i had someone who could fix up my Guitars so fast and competent.

Simplest thing. Once I’m done editing and posting these Metro clips, I’ll write a short article about it. Simple, really!
