An Aracom Attenuator and a Few Vintage Marshalls (Complete)

26 Nov An Aracom Attenuator and a Few Vintage Marshalls (Complete)

So… been meaning to shoot something like this for some time, here you have it.

It’s a long journey into what an attenuator can do for you, with powerful, loud tube amps (ONLY tube amps can be attenuated with an attenuator such as the Aracom).

Total of 6 videos, all being processed right now, here’s the one.

Thanks for viewing, yours,

Fil :)

1967 Gibson SG Standard on 1976 Marshall Super Lead through Aracom PRX150-DAG

1959 Lentz Conversion Les Paul on 1976 Marshall Super Lead through Aracom PRX150-DAG

1969 Gibson SG Custom, non original pickups (old Di Marzio) on 1976 Marshall Super Lead AND 1977 2204, through Aracom. Then, 1970 Gibson SG Standard on 1977 Marshall 2204 through Aracom.

1959 Lentz Conversion on 1977 Marshall 2204 through Aracom

What this Aracom PRX150-DAG looks like up close (it’s the one on the RIGHT 😛 ):

[singlepic id=417 w=1024 h=768 float=]

Technical notes:

While discussing with Jeff, Aracom Owner, Jeff told me

BTW:  With the PRX150 in the “F” (Variable) position, the output of an amp putting out 100 watts is between 0.07 to 1.5 watt entering the speaker cabinet, therefore only 25% of that per speaker, based on a 4×12 cab.

0.1 of a watt (entering the cab) can be considered above conversation level, have to talk loud above it.   It is amazing how “loud” less than a watt is.

Those buying low wattage amps to crank up and play in their homes without disturbing someone would still have to rely on the Master Volume control or an attenuator.

I see that someone asked about the price.  Our dealer sells the PRX150-DAG for $785

hey Fil. I just got a question for ya.

Why haven’t you uploaded anything recently? Has the site been moved or is it just one of those months where nothing happens?

    Cheers,

Hi Jimmi, and sorry for the silence!
Been out for a week (Egypt) where I was supposed to be on holiday, but with two young kids, it was more work there than here! Then came back last monday and “had to work” a lot for the real life of me! But I’m here. I will be making one or two tutorials next week, before Xmas time. Sorry for the lack of communication on my part! Fil :)

        Cheers,

I know its not as important here but you’re not using earnie strings in the 3. clip?
I was always an earnie guy (the slinky RPS stay in tune no matter what I do), believing that this type was the stuff they used.
Are yours Daddario’s here (the different coloured ball ends look weird :D)?

Ne Spur leiser – ein Weber-Attenuator…

Gitarre spielen macht Spass.

I love the alternation between the faster licks and the licks with a lot of feeling in it. They attract eachother!! It’s like asking and answering… Maybe an idea: a lesson/totorial with faster licks and one (or more :D) with licks full of feeling… That would be awesome videolessons!! J-L

Hello everyone, Im going to be getting a 1959 SLP reissue for my 18th birthday, i will mostly be usuing with the band im in, ive heard they are mega loud, do you think it would still dround out the rest of the band with ac/dc tones, and still need an attenuator or not? If so does anyone know any cheap attenuators? Im going for the live sound I know angus uses these live heard there a great amp, any one back that up?

Hehe, congrats for the 1959SLP and for having so nice parents :)
Well, to give you some views: On my JMP with a 1960A 4×12″ cabinet, Volume level 2 is a bit above room loudness level and Volume 4 makes me almost losing my pants :) While I dont have any experiences with the 1959SLP, I recommend using an Attenuator, because the 1959 SLP doesn’t have a Master volume.
Would be very useful for rehearsing and you can adjust your own loudness to the rest of the band while having always the perfect sound.

Ah, and well, regarding cheap attenuators…I’ve seen them between 300 and 600 Euros. Look at ebay, there are a bunch of THD Hotplates for sale now.
Do you get a cabinet too? If so, which one?

Hehe, thankyou. Ive been saving up for over a year so im going to buy it myself sort of self bought birthday present hehe. Thanks for the info 😀 Volume sounds imense from the way you decribed it lol.
Ahh right, looks like ill have to play it fairly clean for a while till I can afford an attenuator then.
Im only buying the head becuase I built my own cabinet replica of a 4×12, the 1960BV with celestion vintage 30s and vintage grill cloth.
          thanks again

Oh, well, its even cooler to buy it yourself. Sometimes, the best gifts are the self bought ones, right? :)
Yes, the volume is immense. As I got my 50 Watt JMP my trouser legs wobbled at volume 4 and the floor vibrates a bit too. And a 100 watter is a little bit (not twice as) louder. I mean, room size is also important, but at home or in a rehearsal room, you can hardy crank it full up :)
So, yes, without an attenuator, you could play it just clean.
My one has a master volume, that helps a lot, but as you can see here in Fil’s videos, they sound much better when cranked or at least volume up to 5 or more.

Did you know that the plexi and the master volume JMP circuit is almost the same? You can easily add a master volume to an 1959SLP if you want to! It will work the same way as it does on a JMP. If you are interested, I can send you some info on this mod. It costs no more than $5

by the way, once I heard a non master volume 100W plexi FULLY CRANKED in a small room without any attenuation. I couldn’t hear anything for a few days after 😀 Someone was playing it, and even 3 rooms away (3 closed doors) I wasn’t able to talk (actually shout) to somebody. When I entered the room with the amp, as I opened the door, the volume was simply blowing my head off. It’s not possible to write down what I felt… 😀

Jake, Young Man, congrats for your soon to be Marshall! You’ll soon find out it is SO loud that it will comb your hair at 3. Best way to use it before you attenuate it is a stomp box in front of it, i.e., an overdrive pedal. No worries, no scandal here. We all used at least one when we couldn’t attenuate it either. Looking forward for your review. PS Sorry all for my absence, I am in North Africa with the whole family for a week. Gonna get some tan if I survive my kids needs! Will be back next monday for more video tutorials etc. I am still reading each comment, got my laptop and iPad with me all day! Love, Fil

          I would recommend LOVEPEDAL 45..
          http://www.lovepedal.com/pedals/the_45.html
it is unfortunately discontinued.. I searched for it for more than 2 years and finally I got it from a guy from Belgium. BUT, it is the one for my JMP. I made a A/B test with the pedals that I had in front of my JMP ( marshall drivemaster, OCD v4, MXR ZW, MXR KK 10EQ, BBE green screamer, tonerider british). The 45 is the one that gives the extra dimension to the sound without the amp loosing its identity, its like putting Mulard Tubes at once. Great boost and fantastic complement for the overall sound.

Hehehe thankyou Fil. I will certainly do a review for everyone here :D. A few years ago I got a line 6 floor pod, like a mulit effecs unit, its rubbish really for the still i play now, but it has a master volume built in and I do believe you can bypass the effects to get the direct amp tone, do you think that would work, my only concern is I dont want to damage the amp head, or wondering if this effects unit can handle that much power without frying?
P.S Hope you are having a fantastic time in Africa Fil, enjoy 😀

Got my SM57 today. Positioning for now seems to be the best as follows:
-Mic distance between cabinet cloth circa 5 cm
-Height just in the middle of the speaker
-Mic axis parallel to the speaker axis, but not pointing at the middle of the cone, but between the middle and the edge of the speaker.
At 9 o’ clock, between the left edge and the middle of the cone, in a manner of speaking.

One question: Can we call the “gain” knob on modern master volume amps “pre-amp”, or are these completely different things ?

    • avatar
      HagusYoung
      Posted at 14:23h, 27 November

Basically the same thing, although the also can be entriely different.
      Example Orange Tiny Terror:
      Volume is the Power amp,
      Gain is the Pre Amp.
But that’s the thing for this circuit, but in different circuits Gain can also add an overall power up to both pre and master (power) amp stages. Depends on your Amp, both Orange and Marshall (lots more, I know them best) changed the Pre amp/Gain function slightly, so you cant even tell that on two Marshall’s Pre amp means Gain, and that they are all the same.

If I didn’t know better I’d assume it’s loud enough to take the paint of your windows.
It’s incredible to feel the sensation of so many layers of sound at room level volume. Each time you turn it up I brace myself, as one would watching 3D :)
